How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Package in 2026?

2026 cost to ship a package: a 1 lb box costs $10.45–$13.65 by USPS Ground Advantage retail and $11.99–$15.03 by UPS Ground or FedEx Ground at published rates, a 5 lb box $14.35–$27.45 by USPS and $14.06–$21.72 by UPS or FedEx, and a 20 lb box $24.20–$72.15 by USPS and $19.20–$43.52 by UPS or FedEx, from zone 2 to zone 8. UPS and FedEx add fuel and residential surcharges on top; USPS does not.
Quick answer: Packages up to about 5 lb are cheapest by USPS Ground Advantage once UPS and FedEx fuel is added, in every zone and to both homes and businesses. From about 20 lb, UPS Ground and FedEx Ground usually cost less for longer distances, and at 50 lb they are far cheaper than USPS. Over 50 lb, UPS and FedEx add an Additional Handling charge, and a 70 lb box is cheapest by USPS in all three zones. Box size matters as much as weight: UPS and FedEx bill every package on dimensional weight, while USPS only does so above 1 cubic foot.
Buying USPS labels online gets lower commercial prices, and a negotiated UPS or FedEx agreement discounts the published rates, but surcharges are easy to overlook either way. A carrier invoice audit shows what you actually pay per package.
Rates: USPS Notice 123 retail prices, effective October 4, 2026 (time-limited prices through January 17, 2027); UPS 2026 Rate and Service Guide, Daily Rates (updated September 7, 2026); FedEx Service Guide (effective January 5, 2026, updated September 11, 2026), list rates. UPS and FedEx amounts are before fuel, residential and other surcharges unless a table says otherwise. Fuel from the UPS and FedEx pages for the week of November 2, 2026.
2027 update: UPS Daily Rates rise an average net 5.9% on December 21, 2026, and FedEx list rates rise an average of 5.9% on January 4, 2027. USPS’s temporary holiday prices are scheduled to end January 17, 2027. Details are in the 2027 section below and in 2027 shipping rate increases compared.
How Much It Costs to Ship a Small, Medium or Large Box
Prices below assume the box is small enough that billable weight equals actual weight: a 1 lb package in a box up to 139 cubic inches (for example 8 x 6 x 2 in.), a 5 lb package in a 12 x 10 x 4 in. box and a 20 lb package in a 14 x 14 x 14 in. box. Zones run from 2 (nearby) to 8 (cross-country) and are set by the origin and destination ZIP codes.
| Package and service | Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small box, 1 lb | |||
| USPS Ground Advantage (retail) | $10.45 | $11.70 | $13.65 |
| UPS Ground (daily rates) | $11.99 | $14.10 | $15.03 |
| FedEx Ground (list) | $11.99 | $14.00 | $15.01 |
| Medium box, 5 lb | |||
| USPS Ground Advantage (retail) | $14.35 | $18.85 | $27.45 |
| UPS Ground (daily rates) | $14.19 | $18.65 | $21.72 |
| FedEx Ground (list) | $14.06 | $18.53 | $21.69 |
| Large box, 20 lb | |||
| USPS Ground Advantage (retail) | $24.20 | $37.90 | $72.15 |
| UPS Ground (daily rates) | $19.20 | $26.97 | $43.33 |
| FedEx Ground (list) | $19.36 | $27.47 | $43.52 |
At base rates, UPS and FedEx are within $0.13 of each other at 1 and 5 lb and within $0.50 at 20 lb. USPS Ground Advantage is the cheapest 1 lb option in all three zones even before fuel. At 5 lb and 20 lb UPS and FedEx look cheaper on paper, but the next section shows what happens once fuel and residential charges are added.
What Determines Shipping Cost
Weight
All three carriers price by the pound and round any fraction up, so a 5.2 lb package is billed as 6 lb. USPS Ground Advantage retail also has ounce prices below 1 lb: the same price at 4 oz and 8 oz, then a higher price up to 15.999 oz. A shirt in a poly mailer at 8 oz or less is $8.55 (zone 2) to $10.20 (zone 8). UPS and FedEx Ground start at 1 lb.
Box size and dimensional weight
Dimensional weight is length x width x height in inches divided by a divisor. UPS and FedEx apply it to every package at a divisor of 139 for daily and list rates, and bill the greater of actual or dimensional weight. USPS uses the same 139 divisor but only for parcels larger than 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches). A 12 x 12 x 12 in. box holding a 5 lb product is billed at 5 lb by USPS and 13 lb by UPS (1,728 / 139 = 12.43, rounded up). A 20 lb load in an 18 x 18 x 18 in. box bills as 42 lb at all three carriers. Negotiated UPS and FedEx agreements can use a higher divisor, such as 166, which lowers dimensional weight. Check a box with our dimensional weight calculator, and see USPS dimensional weight and FedEx dimensional weight.
Distance (zones)
The farther the package goes, the higher the zone and the price. A 20 lb USPS Ground Advantage box costs $24.20 to zone 2 and $72.15 to zone 8, almost three times as much. UPS and FedEx Ground rise less steeply with distance: $19.20 to $43.33 by UPS Ground for the same box.
Speed
Ground is the cheapest service at every carrier. Two-day and overnight air cost several times more; see the speed section below.
Residential delivery
UPS adds a $6.50 Residential Surcharge per Ground package delivered to a home ($7.00 for Air), and FedEx adds $6.45 per FedEx Home Delivery package. USPS charges the same price to homes and businesses. See UPS residential surcharge.
Fuel
UPS and FedEx add a weekly fuel surcharge as a percentage of the transportation charge and most other charges. For the week of November 2, 2026 it was 30.25% for UPS Ground and 29.25% for FedEx Ground and Home Delivery. USPS has no separate fuel surcharge. See the UPS fuel surcharge and FedEx fuel surcharge guides.
Size and handling surcharges
- Over 50 lb: UPS and FedEx add Additional Handling, $46.50 to $58.75 at UPS and $46.00 to $58.75 at FedEx depending on zone.
- Long boxes: a longest side over 48 inches triggers Additional Handling for dimensions at UPS and FedEx, $30.00 to $40.50 at UPS in 2026.
- Over 110 lb or very large: a UPS Large Package Surcharge from $219.50 (commercial) or a FedEx Oversize Charge from $255.00.
- USPS nonstandard fees: Ground Advantage adds $4.50 for length over 22 in., $10.00 over 30 in. and $21.00 for volume over 2 cubic feet. See USPS nonstandard fees.
- Remote addresses: UPS and FedEx add Delivery Area Surcharges for listed ZIP codes; at UPS the 2026 residential amount is $6.55.
Cheapest Way to Ship a Package by Size
This table adds fuel for the week of November 2, 2026 (30.25% UPS, 29.25% FedEx) to the UPS and FedEx transportation charge and to any Additional Handling and residential charge. USPS prices are retail Ground Advantage, which has no fuel or residential surcharge. Peak-season demand surcharges are not included.
| Package | To a business | To a home | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poly mailer, 8 oz or less | USPS Ground Advantage: $8.55 / $9.35 / $10.20 (zones 2 / 5 / 8) | Same as business | UPS and FedEx bill it as at least 1 lb |
| 1 lb | USPS Ground Advantage: $10.45 / $11.70 / $13.65 (zones 2 / 5 / 8) | USPS Ground Advantage: $10.45 / $11.70 / $13.65 (zones 2 / 5 / 8) | UPS and FedEx Ground with fuel cost $5.05 to $6.67 more to a business |
| 5 lb | USPS Ground Advantage: $14.35 / $18.85 / $27.45 (zones 2 / 5 / 8) | USPS Ground Advantage: $14.35 / $18.85 / $27.45 (zones 2 / 5 / 8) | Zone 8 to a business is close: FedEx Ground $28.03 with fuel |
| 20 lb | Zone 2: USPS Ground Advantage $24.20 Zone 5: UPS Ground $35.13 Zone 8: FedEx Ground $56.25 | Zone 2: USPS Ground Advantage $24.20 Zone 5: USPS Ground Advantage $37.90 Zone 8: FedEx Home Delivery $64.59 | Zone 8: UPS and FedEx are within $0.19 to a business and $0.31 to a home |
| 50 lb | FedEx Ground: $37.66 / $68.50 / $116.11 (zones 2 / 5 / 8) | FedEx Home Delivery: $46.00 / $76.84 / $124.44 (zones 2 / 5 / 8) | USPS is $55.14 more to zone 8 |
| 70 lb | USPS Ground Advantage: $72.35 / $134.70 / $204.30 (zones 2 / 5 / 8) | USPS Ground Advantage: $72.35 / $134.70 / $204.30 (zones 2 / 5 / 8) | UPS and FedEx add Additional Handling over 50 lb |
| Over 70 lb | UPS Ground or FedEx Ground | UPS Ground or FedEx Home Delivery | USPS does not accept packages over 70 lb |
Two patterns stand out. USPS Ground Advantage wins on light packages and on 70 lb boxes, where UPS and FedEx add Additional Handling. UPS and FedEx win on dense 20 to 50 lb boxes going farther. The answer moves with your packaging: a light item in a large box can bill at two or three times its actual weight at UPS and FedEx. For heavier boxes, see the cheapest way to ship heavy boxes; for soft goods, see the cheapest way to ship clothes.
Flat rate can also help for heavy items going far. A Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box is $25.80 at any distance, which beats Ground Advantage retail for a 5 lb package to zone 8 ($27.45) if the contents fit the 11 x 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 in. box.

Retail vs Online and Commercial Prices
USPS has two price lists. Retail prices apply at the Post Office counter. Commercial prices apply when postage is paid through approved PC Postage (including most shipping software), Click-N-Ship, an IBI postage meter or a permit imprint, and they are much lower:
| USPS Ground Advantage | Retail | Commercial |
|---|---|---|
| 1 lb, zone 5 | $11.70 | $9.29 |
| 5 lb, zone 8 | $27.45 | $20.24 |
| 20 lb, zone 8 | $72.15 | $42.14 |
Commercial Ground Advantage under 1 lb runs $7.33 (zone 1) to $8.95 (zone 8). Full tables are in USPS Ground Advantage pricing for businesses.
UPS Daily Rates and FedEx list rates are the published starting point for account holders. Shippers with volume negotiate discounts off those rates, and discounts on surcharges, minimums and the dimensional weight divisor matter as much as the headline percentage. Contract-only economy services can also cut residential costs: UPS Ground Saver list rates start at $13.00 for 1 lb to zone 2 with no residential surcharge line, and FedEx Ground Economy charges one rate from 1 to 16 oz ($11.99 in zone 2 to $15.01 in zone 8) plus a $1.15 Delivery and Returns Surcharge. Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to ship a package?
In 2026 a 1 lb package costs $10.45–$13.65 by USPS Ground Advantage retail and $11.99–$15.03 by UPS Ground or FedEx Ground at published rates (zones 2 to 8). A 5 lb package costs $14.35–$27.45 by USPS and $14.06–$21.72 by UPS or FedEx. UPS and FedEx add fuel and residential surcharges on top.
What is the cheapest way to ship a package?
For packages up to about 5 lb, USPS Ground Advantage, especially with commercial pricing from shipping software. For dense 20 to 50 lb boxes going farther, UPS Ground or FedEx Ground. For 51 to 70 lb boxes, compare USPS Ground Advantage, because UPS and FedEx add Additional Handling over 50 lb.
How much does it cost to ship a box?
A 20 lb box in a 14 x 14 x 14 in. carton costs $19.20–$43.33 by UPS Ground, $19.36–$43.52 by FedEx Ground and $24.20–$72.15 by USPS Ground Advantage retail from zone 2 to zone 8, before UPS and FedEx fuel and residential surcharges. A larger box can cost more because of dimensional weight.
How much does it cost to mail a package at the Post Office?
At the Post Office counter you pay USPS retail prices: $10.45–$13.65 for a 1 lb package by Ground Advantage and $14.35–$27.45 for a 5 lb package, depending on zone. Buying the label online gets lower commercial prices, for example $9.29 instead of $11.70 for 1 lb to zone 5.
Is USPS cheaper than UPS and FedEx?
Usually for light packages. With fuel, USPS Ground Advantage retail beats UPS and FedEx Ground published rates for 1 lb and 5 lb packages in zones 2, 5 and 8. UPS and FedEx usually win on 20 to 50 lb boxes going farther. Negotiated contracts change the comparison.
Does box size affect shipping cost?
Yes. UPS and FedEx bill every package at the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight (length x width x height / 139). USPS does the same only for parcels over 1 cubic foot. A 5 lb product in a 12 x 12 x 12 in. box bills as 13 lb at UPS.
Will shipping cost more in 2027?
Yes for UPS and FedEx. UPS Daily Rates rise an average net 5.9% on December 21, 2026 and FedEx list rates an average of 5.9% on January 4, 2027. USPS’s temporary holiday prices are scheduled to end January 17, 2027.
