How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Guitar? 2026 Rates by Carrier

2026 cost to ship a guitar: an electric guitar in a 42 x 16 x 6 in box (15 lb) is billed as 30 lb and costs $23.02 to $62.08 by UPS or FedEx Ground (Zones 2, 5 and 8, before fuel and residential fees); an acoustic in a 45 x 19 x 7 in box costs $28.30 to $82.93. The cheapest published price is $23.02 by FedEx Ground to Zone 2. USPS costs more because guitar boxes pay $31 or more in nonstandard fees.

Quick answer: Guitar boxes are long and light, so you pay for dimensional weight: the electric example box bills as 30 lb and the acoustic box as 44 lb at the 139 divisor. Both stay under 48 in long, so UPS and FedEx add no Additional Handling fee. A bass box over 48 in does. USPS Ground Advantage adds $10 for a parcel over 30 in long plus $21 for one over 2 cubic feet, so the electric guitar costs $75.45 to $151.30 at retail. UPS and FedEx Ground are the cheapest published options for both example boxes, even after fuel and the residential surcharge.

2027 update: UPS Daily Rates rise an average net 5.9% on December 21, 2026. In the UPS 2027 daily rate preview, UPS Ground for the 30 lb electric box goes from $23.20–$62.08 to $24.57–$65.75 and for the 44 lb acoustic box from $28.62–$82.93 to $30.31–$87.83 (Zones 2–8). UPS also raises the Additional Handling minimum billable weight from 40 to 50 lb, the Ground residential surcharge to $7.10 and declared value to $1.84 per $100. FedEx list rates rise an average 5.9% on January 4, 2027, with the Ground residential charge at $6.90 and declared value at $1.80 per $100 over $300. USPS holiday prices end January 17, 2027. Guitar box sizes and billable weight

The sizes below are example boxes, typical of the cartons guitars are shipped in, not carrier-defined sizes. Weights include the case or gig bag and packing. Measure your own packed box and check it in our dimensional weight calculator.

UPS and FedEx round each side up to the next inch, multiply, divide by 139 and round up to the next pound. USPS does the same for parcels over 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), which every guitar box is (USPS Dimensional Weight 2026: The New 139 Divisor Explained). USPS also charges nonstandard fees by size: $10.00 (Ground Advantage) or $21.00 (Priority Mail) for a parcel longer than 30 in, plus $21.00 or $35.00 for one larger than 2 cubic feet (3,456 cubic inches). Both fees apply together (USPS Nonstandard Fees 2026).

UPS and FedEx Ground rates are within 40 cents of each other: FedEx Ground is lower in Zone 2, UPS Ground in Zone 5 and FedEx Ground in Zone 8. Delivery to a home adds the residential surcharge: $6.50 per package for UPS Ground and $6.45 for FedEx Home Delivery in 2026 (UPS guide; FedEx Service Guide).

The acoustic box bills at 44 lb even though it weighs 18 lb, so the box, not the guitar, sets the price. Cheapest before fuel: FedEx Ground in Zone 2, UPS Ground in Zone 5 and FedEx Ground in Zone 8.

Estimated cost to a home, with fuel

This estimate adds the residential surcharge and applies the current fuel percentage to the whole UPS or FedEx charge. It leaves out demand and delivery area surcharges. USPS prices already include delivery to any address.

Estimated to a homeZone 2Zone 5Zone 8
Electric: UPS Ground (+ $6.50, fuel 30.25%)$38.68$55.29$89.33
Electric: FedEx Home Delivery (+ $6.45, fuel 29.25%)$38.09$54.91$88.19
Electric: USPS Ground Advantage$75.45$107.30$151.30
Acoustic: UPS Ground (+ $6.50, fuel 30.25%)$45.74$73.29$116.48
Acoustic: FedEx Home Delivery (+ $6.45, fuel 29.25%)$44.91$72.69$115.01
Acoustic: USPS Ground Advantage$87.60$131.80$188.75

UPS and FedEx rates exclude fuel. The UPS Ground fuel surcharge is 30.25% effective November 2, 2026, and UPS lists Additional Handling, Large Package and Residential surcharges among the charges fuel applies to (UPS accessorial fuel list). FedEx Ground and Home Delivery fuel is 29.25% for November 2–8, 2026. Both change weekly. USPS prices include fuel and residential delivery.

Even with fuel and the residential surcharge, UPS and FedEx come out well below USPS for both example boxes, because USPS adds $31.00 in nonstandard fees and bills the same dimensional weight. On these estimates the cheapest option to a home is FedEx Home Delivery in all three zones for both the electric and the acoustic box.

Bass guitars and long boxes: the 48-inch line

A bass box around 50 x 17 x 6 in is 5,100 cubic inches (37 lb dimensional), but because its longest side is over 48 in, UPS and FedEx add Additional Handling – Dimensions and bill it at a minimum of 40 lb. To Zone 5 that is $44.86 + $38.50 = $83.36 at UPS and $44.80 + $38.50 = $83.30 at FedEx before fuel. USPS Ground Advantage would be $89.05 + $31.00 = $120.05. From December 21, 2026, UPS raises the Additional Handling minimum to 50 lb. If the instrument fits in a box 48 in long or less, the surcharge and the minimum disappear (FedEx Additional Handling Surcharge – Dimensions 2026; What Does UPS Additional Handling – Dimension Charge Mean?).

Guitar case vs. box: how to pack

  • Put the case in a corrugated box. A hard case shipped on its own is not fully encased in corrugated cardboard and has handles, which is the Additional Handling – Packaging trigger at both UPS ($26.75–$33.75) and FedEx ($26.50–$33.75). A box around the case avoids it and protects the case.
  • Gig bag or no case: use a guitar shipping box with padding around the headstock and neck, and fill empty space so nothing moves.
  • Loosen the strings and support the neck and headstock, the parts most likely to break in transit.
  • Keep the box tight. Every extra inch of width or height adds dimensional weight; staying at or under 48 in long avoids Additional Handling.
  • Drop off at a carrier counter. UPS Access Point locations do not take packages longer than 38 in or over 44 lb.

Declared value and insurance for a guitar

UPS and FedEx are liable for $100 per package unless you declare a higher value and pay for it, and USPS Ground Advantage and Priority Mail include $100 of insurance. What extra coverage costs in 2026:

Guitar valueUPS declared valueFedEx declared valueUSPS insurance
$500.00$8.50$8.25$7.55
$1,500.00$25.50$24.75$22.55
$3,000.00$51.00$49.50$45.05

UPS charges $1.70 per $100 of total value over $300 (Sept 7, 2026 guide). FedEx charges $1.65 per $100 over $300; FedEx counts every $100 increment, as we explain in FedEx Declared Value Fee 2026. USPS fees come from the Notice 123 insurance table (up to $5,000). FedEx limits declared value to $1,000 for musical instruments more than 20 years old or customized, so a vintage or custom guitar cannot be fully covered with FedEx declared value. Declared value is not insurance: you still have to prove the loss. See What Does UPS Declared Value Mean? and USPS Shipping Insurance 2026.

For valuable instruments, add a signature. FedEx applies Direct Signature Required by default, with no signature fee, to U.S. packages declared at $500 or more. USPS Signature Confirmation is $5.15 at retail and Adult Signature Required is $9.70 (USPS Signature Confirmation and Adult Signature Fees 2026).

When a music shop or shipping service may be worth it

Guitar shops and luthiers often ship instruments regularly and can pack a guitar properly, sometimes on discounted carrier accounts. Pack-and-ship stores will also pack for you and ship at retail rates; at The UPS Store that means UPS Retail Rates. That can be worth paying for an expensive or fragile instrument. Compare any quote with the all-in carrier estimate above and confirm the coverage limit for your guitar.

UPS rates here are Daily Rates, the published rates for account holders. Packages shipped at The UPS Store and other retail locations are billed at UPS Retail Rates instead, and UPS says the Ground fuel surcharge does not apply to UPS Ground packages from the 48 states billed at Retail rates (UPS fuel surcharge page). FedEx Ground rates are FedEx list rates. Shipping software and contracts usually price below both, and USPS commercial prices (through shipping software) are lower than the retail prices shown; see USPS Ground Advantage Pricing for Businesses.
