Cheapest Way to Ship Books in 2026: Media Mail vs Ground Advantage

2026 USPS rate: Media Mail is the cheapest way to ship books in the U.S.: $4.39 for 1 lb, $7.34 for 5 lb and $18.39 for 20 lb to any U.S. address, under USPS prices effective October 4, 2026.
Quick answer: Media Mail is priced by weight only, not distance, and it costs less than USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail and UPS or FedEx Ground at every weight in our examples. The trade-offs: delivery typically takes 2 to 8 days with no guarantee, only qualifying items (books of at least 8 pages with no advertising, printed music, sound and video recordings and similar media) are allowed, and USPS can open the package to check. Schools, libraries, museums and qualifying nonprofits can use Library Mail, which is a little cheaper.

UPS and FedEx are list rates before fuel surcharge.
Media Mail Prices 2026
Media Mail and Library Mail are charged per pound, and any fraction of a pound counts as a full pound (DMM 173.1.2). The minimum is the 1 lb price, so a 6 oz paperback costs $4.39. The price is the same whether the book goes across town or across the country.
| Weight | Media Mail | Library Mail |
|---|---|---|
| 1 lb | $4.39 | $4.17 |
| 2 lb | $5.13 | $4.87 |
| 5 lb | $7.34 | $6.97 |
| 10 lb | $11.02 | $10.47 |
| 20 lb | $18.39 | $17.47 |
The maximum weight is 70 lb. Media Mail was not part of USPS’s temporary holiday price change, so these prices do not drop back on January 17, 2027 the way Priority Mail and Ground Advantage prices are scheduled to.
Media Mail vs Ground Advantage vs Priority Mail
USPS Ground Advantage and Priority Mail prices depend on zone. These are retail prices; commercial prices for labels bought online are lower (see our Ground Advantage commercial rates guide).
| Weight | Media Mail (any zone) | Ground Advantage Zone 2 | Ground Advantage Zone 5 | Ground Advantage Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lb | $4.39 | $10.45 | $11.70 | $13.65 |
| 2 lb | $5.13 | $12.00 | $14.85 | $19.80 |
| 5 lb | $7.34 | $14.35 | $18.85 | $27.45 |
| 10 lb | $11.02 | $17.10 | $24.25 | $40.85 |
| 20 lb | $18.39 | $24.20 | $37.90 | $72.15 |
| Weight | Priority Mail Zone 2 | Priority Mail Zone 5 | Priority Mail Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lb | $12.00 | $14.05 | $17.95 |
| 2 lb | $13.15 | $17.85 | $22.55 |
| 5 lb | $15.75 | $24.20 | $39.00 |
| 10 lb | $19.05 | $30.75 | $63.40 |
| 20 lb | $27.05 | $51.25 | $113.70 |
The gap grows with weight and distance. A 1 lb book to Zone 2 costs $6.06 more by Ground Advantage retail than by Media Mail. A 20 lb box to Zone 8 costs $53.76 more.
What About Flat Rate Boxes?
Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes cost $14.65 (Small), $25.80 (Medium) and $36.10 (Large) at retail, regardless of weight up to 70 lb. Media Mail stays cheaper than the Medium Flat Rate Box up to 30 lb ($25.76) and cheaper than the Large Flat Rate Box up to 44 lb ($36.07). These Flat Rate prices include USPS’s temporary holiday increase ($1.00 on the Medium box, $2.10 on the Large), scheduled to end January 17, 2027; at $24.80 and $34.00 the break-even points would be 28 lb and 41 lb. A Flat Rate Box makes sense for books when speed matters: Priority Mail is 2 to 3 days, against 2 to 8 days for Media Mail.
UPS and FedEx for Books
UPS and FedEx have no media rate. Their ground prices for a 10 lb and 20 lb box of books, before fuel:
| Service | Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Media Mail, 10 lb | $11.02 | $11.02 | $11.02 |
| UPS Ground, 10 lb | $15.91 | $20.46 | $26.29 |
| FedEx Ground, 10 lb | $15.85 | $20.46 | $26.38 |
| Media Mail, 20 lb | $18.39 | $18.39 | $18.39 |
| UPS Ground, 20 lb | $19.20 | $26.97 | $43.33 |
| FedEx Ground, 20 lb | $19.36 | $27.47 | $43.52 |
Those are business-address prices. Delivery to a home adds $6.50 at UPS and $6.45 at FedEx (Home Delivery), so a 20 lb box to a home in Zone 2 is $25.70 by UPS Ground. Books are dense, so dimensional weight rarely changes the price, but measure the box anyway: UPS and FedEx divide length x width x height by 139 for every package. Try the dimensional weight calculator.
Media Mail Rules: What Qualifies
Under DMM 173.4.1, only these items can go at Media Mail prices:
- Books of at least 8 printed pages, consisting wholly of reading matter or scholarly bibliography, with no advertising other than incidental announcements of books
- Printed music, in bound or sheet form
- Sound recordings and video recordings
- 16 mm or narrower films, playscripts and manuscripts, printed objective test materials and printed educational reference charts
- Loose-leaf medical information pages and binders, and computer-readable media with prerecorded information
USPS says video games, computer drives and digital drives do not qualify. Magazines are not on the list. You can include an invoice for the items (DMM 173.6.3) and an incidental personal message or greeting without paying First-Class postage (DMM 173.6.4).
Inspection and Delivery Time
Media Mail and Library Mail are not sealed against postal inspection. Mailing at these prices is consent to inspection of the contents, regardless of how the package is closed (DMM 173.2.2). The Media Mail section of USPS’s Mail & Shipping Services page says all Media Mail packages are subject to opening and inspection, and that if you include anything not allowed, you or your recipient will have to pay higher postage. Businesses buying labels online also face USPS postage adjustments after the fact; see USPS APV Postage Adjustments.
USPS lists Media Mail delivery as 2 to 8 days, and DMM 173.2.1 says USPS does not guarantee delivery within a specified time. Ground Advantage is 2 to 5 days.
Library Mail
Library Mail is priced slightly below Media Mail, but the address or return address must show the name of a school, college, university, public library, museum, herbarium or a qualifying nonprofit organization (DMM 173.5.1). Books, printed music, periodicals, sound recordings and other library materials qualify when sent between those institutions, or between one of them and an individual or publisher as described in DMM 173.5.2. A private seller mailing a book to a customer cannot use it.
