How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Laptop, PC or Monitor in 2026?

2026 cost to ship a laptop: about $14.70 to $29.75 with USPS Ground Advantage (a 6 lb laptop in an 18 x 14 x 4 inch box, zone 2 to zone 8, retail) or $15.47 to $23.42 with UPS Ground at daily rates. A 30 lb desktop tower bills as 46 lb and costs $29.09 to $85.73 by UPS or FedEx Ground, before residential and fuel surcharges.
2027 update: UPS Daily Rates rise an average net 5.9% on December 21, 2026. In UPS’s 2027 preview, UPS Ground for the laptop box (8 lb billable) is $16.39 to $24.81 and for the desktop tower (46 lb) $31.20 to $90.79. FedEx list rates rise an average 5.9% on January 4, 2027, and FedEx’s Ground residential charge goes from $6.45 to $6.90. The USPS prices below are temporary holiday prices scheduled to end January 17, 2027. Sources: UPS 2027 Daily Package Rates preview; FedEx rate changes; USPS temporary price change. Quick answer: A laptop is small enough that USPS charges it by actual weight, and USPS adds no residential surcharge, so USPS Ground Advantage is usually the cheapest way to ship a laptop to a home. Desktop towers, monitors and consoles come in big boxes. All three carriers bill those on dimensional weight, and USPS also adds $21 to $39.50 in nonstandard fees, so UPS Ground or FedEx Ground usually costs much less. Laptops contain lithium-ion batteries, which each carrier treats as regulated dangerous goods with its own packing rules.
Rates: USPS Notice 123 retail prices, effective October 4, 2026 (temporary prices through January 17, 2027); UPS 2026 Rate and Service Guide, Daily Rates (updated September 7, 2026); FedEx Service Guide (effective January 5, 2026, updated September 11, 2026), list rates. Battery rules: USPS Publication 52, section 349 and Packaging Instruction 9D; UPS How to Ship Batteries; FedEx Dangerous Goods: How to Ship. Example Boxes and Billable Weights
Shipping cost depends on the box, not the device. These are typical packed sizes; measure your own carton. UPS and FedEx bill the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight: length x width x height in inches, divided by 139, with each side and the result rounded up. USPS uses the same 139 divisor but only on parcels larger than 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), and adds nonstandard fees for parcels longer than 22 inches or larger than 2 cubic feet.
| Item | Box | Actual weight | UPS/FedEx billable | USPS billable | USPS nonstandard fees (Ground Advantage / Priority Mail) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Laptop | 18 x 14 x 4 in | 6 lb | 8 lb | 6 lb | None |
| Desktop PC tower | 24 x 12 x 22 in | 30 lb | 46 lb | 46 lb | $25.50 / $39.50 |
| 27-inch monitor | 30 x 8 x 20 in | 15 lb | 35 lb | 35 lb | $25.50 / $39.50 |
| Game console (PS5-size box) | 22 x 18 x 10 in | 14 lb | 29 lb | 29 lb | $21.00 / $35.00 |
The laptop box is 1,008 cubic inches. UPS and FedEx bill it at 8 lb (7.25 rounded up), while USPS charges the 6 lb actual weight because the box is under 1 cubic foot. The desktop box is 6,336 cubic inches, so a 30 lb tower bills as 46 lb everywhere. Run your own cartons through our dimensional weight calculator, and see USPS dimensional weight and FedEx dimensional weight for the rounding rules. The USPS fees are explained in USPS nonstandard fees.
How Much It Costs to Ship a Laptop
| Service (billable weight) | Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage (retail, 6 lb) | $14.70 | $19.80 | $29.75 |
| USPS Priority Mail (retail, 6 lb) | $16.15 | $25.35 | $43.95 |
| UPS Ground (daily rates, 8 lb) | $15.47 | $19.80 | $23.42 |
| FedEx Ground (list, 8 lb) | $15.40 | $19.74 | $23.50 |
| UPS Next Day Air Saver (daily rates, 8 lb) | $59.12 | $150.88 | $181.82 |
Base rates before surcharges. Priority Mail pieces that contain hazardous material also pay a $7.50 Hazmat Handling Fee (see the battery section below). The next-day row is for comparison only; for overnight options from all three carriers see how much next-day shipping costs.
To a business address, the cheapest base rate is USPS Ground Advantage in zone 2 ($14.70), FedEx Ground in zone 5 ($19.74) and UPS Ground in zone 8 ($23.42). Those zone 5 and zone 8 leads are a few cents and disappear once fuel is added: at the November 2, 2026 fuel rates, UPS and FedEx come to about $25.51 to $30.50 in those zones, above USPS Ground Advantage. To a home the gap widens, because UPS adds a $6.50 residential surcharge and FedEx Home Delivery adds $6.45 per package, while USPS adds nothing:
| Laptop to a home | Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | $14.70 | $19.80 | $29.75 |
| UPS Ground + $6.50 residential | $21.97 | $26.30 | $29.92 |
| FedEx Home Delivery + $6.45 residential | $21.85 | $26.19 | $29.95 |
UPS and FedEx totals are before fuel, which is added on top as a percentage. USPS has no fuel surcharge.
How Much It Costs to Ship a Desktop Computer
| Service (billable weight) | Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage (retail, 46 lb, incl. $25.50 nonstandard fees) | $83.65 | $129.50 | $187.95 |
| USPS Priority Mail (retail, 46 lb, incl. $39.50 nonstandard fees) | $104.70 | $166.70 | $235.20 |
| UPS Ground (daily rates, 46 lb) | $29.46 | $50.99 | $85.73 |
| FedEx Ground (list, 46 lb) | $29.09 | $50.75 | $85.32 |
Here the result flips. USPS charges the same 46 lb dimensional weight plus a $4.50 fee for the 24 inch length and a $21.00 (Ground Advantage) or $35.00 (Priority Mail) fee for exceeding 2 cubic feet. To a home in zone 5, the tower costs $57.49 by UPS Ground and $57.20 by FedEx Home Delivery before fuel, against $129.50 by Ground Advantage. A gaming PC that weighs more than 46 lb packed bills on actual weight instead.
How Much It Costs to Ship a Monitor or Game Console
A 27-inch monitor in a 30 x 8 x 20 inch box (15 lb actual, 35 lb billable):
| Service (billable weight) | Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage (retail, 35 lb, incl. $25.50 nonstandard fees) | $74.60 | $111.10 | $160.15 |
| USPS Priority Mail (retail, 35 lb, incl. $39.50 nonstandard fees) | $94.45 | $144.20 | $207.85 |
| UPS Ground (daily rates, 35 lb) | $24.83 | $40.18 | $70.21 |
| FedEx Ground (list, 35 lb) | $24.76 | $40.50 | $69.87 |
A game console in a 22 x 18 x 10 inch box (14 lb actual, 29 lb billable). The 22 inch side is not over 22 inches, so only the 2 cubic foot fee applies at USPS:
| Service (billable weight) | Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage (retail, 29 lb, incl. $21.00 nonstandard fees) | $64.45 | $95.40 | $138.35 |
| USPS Priority Mail (retail, 29 lb, incl. $35.00 nonstandard fees) | $83.45 | $125.95 | $187.60 |
| UPS Ground (daily rates, 29 lb) | $22.98 | $34.57 | $59.61 |
| FedEx Ground (list, 29 lb) | $22.79 | $34.92 | $59.88 |
For the monitor to a home in zone 5: $46.68 by UPS, $46.95 by FedEx Home Delivery (both before fuel) and $111.10 by Ground Advantage. A smaller box is the biggest saving available. Cutting the monitor box to 28 x 7 x 18 inches drops it to 3,528 cubic inches, or 26 lb billable.
Surcharges on Top: Residential and Fuel
- Residential: UPS charges $6.50 per Ground package to a home ($7.10 from December 21, 2026). FedEx adds $6.45 to FedEx Home Delivery ($6.90 from January 4, 2027). USPS has no residential surcharge. See UPS residential surcharge and FedEx residential delivery charge.
- Fuel: a weekly percentage. For the week of November 2, 2026, UPS Ground fuel is 30.25% and FedEx Ground fuel is 29.25%. Check the current week before you quote a price.
- Delivery area surcharges apply to some rural and remote ZIP codes, and peak-season demand surcharges apply through mid-January 2027.
Shipping a Computer With the Battery Installed
Laptops and tablets contain lithium-ion batteries. Shipped inside the device they are classed as UN3481, “lithium-ion batteries contained in equipment.” A battery inside a consumer laptop can normally ship by ground with each carrier, but each one has its own rules. Our hazmat shipping guide covers the general rules.
USPS
- Allowed by air or ground when the battery is installed in the equipment it powers, under Pub 52, section 349 and Packaging Instruction 9D. Limits: no more than 20 Wh per cell and 100 Wh per battery, and no more than 8 cells or 2 batteries per package.
- Packaging: rigid, sealed outer packaging; the device protected from damage, short circuit and being switched on; cushioned so it can’t move.
- Marking: a DOT lithium battery mark showing UN3481 is required, except for packages with no more than four cells or two batteries installed in the equipment. A single laptop usually falls in that exception.
- Used devices are ground only. USPS treats a device that is not new in its original packaging, and not manufacturer-certified new or refurbished, as a used, damaged or defective device. It can travel by surface transportation only and must be marked “Restricted Electronic Device” and “Surface Transportation Only.” In practice that means USPS Ground Advantage, not Priority Mail. Damaged, defective or recalled batteries are prohibited unless USPS approves them.
- Priority Mail extras: Priority Mail pieces containing hazardous material pay a nonrefundable $7.50 Hazmat Handling Fee (DMM 123.1.8; $0.00 for Ground Advantage). USPS-produced packaging, including Flat Rate boxes, can’t be used for hazardous material except Ground Advantage packaging (DMM 601.6.1).
Older guides cite DMM 601.10.20 for lithium batteries. USPS moved all hazardous materials rules into Publication 52 in 2014 (DMM 601.8.1), so Pub 52 is the current source.
UPS
- The UPS rate guide says any device with batteries installed must have its on/off switch protected from activation, or the batteries removed with terminals protected. It adds that electronics sent for repair, such as computers and cell phones, should be sent without batteries.
- Batteries that require shipping papers can only be shipped by UPS contract hazmat shippers.
- UPS does not accept lithium batteries via UPS Ground to or from Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and several islands.
- Damaged, defective or recalled lithium batteries are ground only, lower 48 states only, and UPS accepts them only under a DOT special permit with a separate UPS agreement (UPS How to Ship Batteries).
FedEx
- FedEx says all types of lithium batteries are dangerous goods. Batteries inside or packed with equipment that meet IATA Section II (UN3481 and UN3091) can go in FedEx boxes, be dropped off at FedEx Office and drop boxes, and carry no dangerous goods surcharge (FedEx Dangerous Goods).
- FedEx does not accept standalone lithium-ion or lithium metal batteries (UN3480, UN3090) offered as Section II.
- The FedEx Service Guide bars FedEx Ground and Home Delivery hazmat, including UN3480 and UN3090 batteries, on service to Alaska and Hawaii, and says its ground hazmat service, including all lithium batteries, is not available to or from air-served locations such as Catalina Island and Mackinac Island.
Declared Value and Insurance for a $1,000 or $2,000 Computer
USPS includes $100 of insurance on Ground Advantage and Priority Mail. UPS and FedEx limit their liability to $100 unless you declare a higher value and pay for it. Declared value is not insurance.
| Coverage | USPS insurance | UPS declared value (2026 / from Dec 21, 2026) | FedEx declared value (2026 / from Jan 4, 2027) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | $15.05 | $17.00 / $18.40 | $16.50 / $18.00 |
| $2,000 | $30.05 | $34.00 / $36.80 | $33.00 / $36.00 |
USPS: $9.05 plus $1.50 per $100 over $600 (Notice 123). UPS: $1.70 per $100 of total value, rising to $1.84 on December 21, 2026. FedEx: $1.65 per $100 over $300, rising to $1.80 on January 4, 2027; the FedEx column counts each $100 of the full value, as explained in our FedEx declared value guide. Details: USPS shipping insurance and UPS declared value.
How to Ship a Computer for Less
- Use the smallest box that protects the device. On UPS and FedEx, every inch counts toward dimensional weight. On USPS, staying under 1 cubic foot removes dimensional weight entirely, and staying under 22 inches and 2 cubic feet avoids nonstandard fees.
- Laptops to homes: compare USPS Ground Advantage first. It has no residential or fuel surcharge.
- Towers, monitors and consoles: UPS Ground or FedEx Ground usually wins by a wide margin.
- Avoid Priority Mail for big boxes. The $35.00 Priority Mail fee for parcels over 2 cubic feet, plus the $7.50 Hazmat Handling Fee on pieces that contain hazardous material such as a lithium battery, adds up quickly.
- Declare value only up to what the item is worth. Carriers pay no more than actual value.
