How Much Is Next-Day Shipping? 2026 Package Costs by Carrier

How Much Is Next-Day Shipping? 2026 Package Costs by Carrier

2026 next-day shipping cost: a 1 lb package costs $37.75 to $65.15 by USPS Priority Mail Express at the Post Office, $41.31 to $102.87 by UPS Next Day Air Saver and $40.82 to $99.65 by FedEx Standard Overnight in zones 2, 5 and 8, before surcharges.

Quick answer: For small packages going any distance, USPS Priority Mail Express is usually the cheapest next-day option, but USPS sells it as a 1–3 day service, so not every ZIP pair gets next-day delivery. For short trips the three carriers are close: a 10 lb package in zone 2 is $61.47 by UPS Next Day Air Saver, $61.93 by FedEx Standard Overnight and $64.00 by Priority Mail Express. At UPS and FedEx list rates, next-day air costs about 3.4 to 8 times the ground rate, and both add residential and fuel charges on top.

What "Next Day" Means for Each Carrier

  • USPS Priority Mail Express: USPS describes it as "1–3 day delivery service by 6 PM with a money–back guarantee." Per the Domestic Mail Manual, the number of days depends on the ZIP codes and acceptance date; the receipt shows the guaranteed date.
  • UPS Next Day Air Saver: guaranteed delivery to commercial and residential addresses by end of the next business day, where UPS Next Day Air is committed by 10:30 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. It is not available where Next Day Air is committed after 12:00 p.m. UPS lists it among the services whose Service Guarantee is currently active.
  • FedEx Standard Overnight: next business day by 5 p.m. FedEx's One Rate tables note delivery by 8 p.m. to residences. Standard Overnight is on the list of services covered by the FedEx Money-Back Guarantee.

Faster tiers cost more: 1 lb in zone 2 is $45.06 by UPS Next Day Air and $45.22 by FedEx Priority Overnight. Compare service levels in Best Overnight Shipping Service 2026.

Why Online Stores Charge So Much for Next-Day Shipping

The base rate is only part of what a merchant pays. UPS and FedEx add three more charges to most next-day orders going to a home:

  • Residential surcharge. UPS charges $7.00 per package for domestic air services and $6.50 for Ground. FedEx charges $6.95 for Express package services and $6.45 for FedEx Ground and Home Delivery.
  • Fuel surcharge. UPS lists 34.25% for domestic air and 30.25% for ground for the week of November 2, 2026 on its fuel surcharge page. It changes weekly, and the air percentage applies to a much larger base rate.
  • Demand surcharges. UPS adds $1.35 per Next Day Air package from October 25 to November 21, 2026, $2.50 from November 22 to December 26, and $1.35 from December 27, 2026 to January 16, 2027 (UPS demand surcharges).

Example: a 5 lb package to a home in zone 5 by UPS Next Day Air Saver is $124.66, plus $42.70 of fuel at 34.25% and the $7.00 residential surcharge, or about $174.36 before any fuel on the surcharge itself. The same package by UPS Ground is $18.65 plus $5.64 of fuel and $6.50 residential, about $30.79. Next-day costs roughly 5.7 times as much. Contract discounts change both numbers.

How to Get Next-Day Delivery for Less

  • Check whether ground already arrives next day. UPS says Ground is "typically in one to five business days" and points to its time-in-transit maps; FedEx Ground is 1–5 days based on distance. A nearby customer may get a ground package the next business day, though without an air guarantee.
  • Ship from closer to the customer. A 5 lb FedEx Standard Overnight package is $51.95 in zone 2 and $141.30 in zone 8.
  • Pick the end-of-day tier. UPS Next Day Air Saver and FedEx Standard Overnight cost less than the earlier-delivery services and are still guaranteed.
  • Use flat-rate packaging for small, heavy items. UPS Simple Rate Next Day Air Saver is $35.45 to $96.70 by box size with no residential or fuel surcharge. See Flat Rate Overnight Shipping 2026.
  • Buy USPS postage online for Commercial prices.
  • Right-size the box. UPS and FedEx may bill dimensional weight on large, light boxes (FedEx Dimensional Weight 2026).
  • Claim late-delivery refunds. All three services above are guaranteed (UPS Late Delivery Refund 2026).

2027 update: UPS daily rates for Ground and Air rise an average net 5.9% on December 21, 2026 (UPS 2027 rate update), and the UPS residential surcharge goes from $7.00 to $7.60 for air and from $6.50 to $7.10 for Ground (UPS 2027 preview). FedEx list rates rise an average 5.9% on January 4, 2027, and the residential delivery charge goes from $6.95 to $7.35 for Express and from $6.45 to $6.90 for Ground and Home Delivery (FedEx 2027 changes). Current USPS prices include a time-limited holiday price change that runs through January 17, 2027; USPS had not posted the prices that follow as of October 30, 2026.
