On top of the rate you pay a weekly fuel surcharge (33.00% for domestic air the week of October 26, 2026, and 34.25% from November 2), $7.00 if the package goes to a home, and $16.00 for Saturday delivery. |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lb | $75.06 | $97.38 | $116.64 | $125.84 | $131.09 | $142.57 | $145.30 |

UPS bills each Next Day Air Early package as two charges: the Early rate and a $30.00 surcharge, both already included in the table. If you see two lines for one Early package on your invoice, that is why. UPS can also charge $10.00 when an Early package goes to a destination outside the Early service area. To zone 2, a 1 lb Early package costs $30.00 more than Next Day Air.
Billable weight is the actual weight rounded up to the next whole pound, or the dimensional weight if higher: length x width x height in inches divided by 139.
UPS Express Envelope (Letter) Rates
Documents, correspondence and electronic media up to eight ounces in a UPS Express Envelope pay a flat Letter rate instead of the 1 lb rate. At daily rates the Next Day Air Letter is $37.30 to zone 2 and $71.47 to zone 8; the Saver Letter is $36.00 to $66.89; the Early Letter is $67.30 to $101.47. An Express Envelope over eight ounces is billed at the rate for its weight. The full letter rate tables, retail and daily, are in our UPS Next Day Air letter guide.
Retail vs. Daily Rates
UPS’s Retail Rate guide says shippers who do not receive daily rates are charged retail rates, and that the guide applies to packages processed at The UPS Store, UPS Alliance Locations and UPS Authorized Shipping Outlets. UPS notes that third-party retailers’ charges for value-added services and other surcharges may vary. Retail Next Day Air rates:
| Weight | Zone 2 | Zone 3 | Zone 4 | Zone 5 | Zone 6 | Zone 7 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lb | $41.37 | $63.61 | $80.16 | $89.12 | $95.36 | $99.05 | $102.45 |
| 2 lb | $43.33 | $67.01 | $86.72 | $96.61 | $103.40 | $109.74 | $117.47 |
| 5 lb | $50.54 | $77.21 | $109.01 | $119.95 | $127.55 | $136.75 | $143.13 |
| 10 lb | $59.71 | $94.72 | $145.04 | $161.21 | $169.42 | $179.91 | $188.89 |
In the current editions, retail is not always higher. Across the 1, 2, 5 and 10 lb rates for the three services in zones 2 to 8, the retail rate is lower than the daily rate in 82 of 84 cells. For example, a 1 lb Next Day Air package to zone 2 is $41.37 retail against $45.06 daily, but a 10 lb package to zone 3 is $94.72 retail against $91.32 daily. Negotiated account discounts change these numbers, so check your own rates in UPS shipping software.
Surcharges Added to UPS Next Day Air
The rate guide says its rates do not include a fuel surcharge. The add-ons most likely to apply to an overnight package:
| Charge | 2026 amount | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel surcharge (Domestic Air) | 33.00% (week of Oct. 26, 2026); 34.25% from Nov. 2, 2026 | Every Next Day Air Early, Next Day Air and Saver shipment; changes weekly |
| Residential Surcharge | $7.00 | Delivery to a home, including a business run from a home |
| Saturday Delivery | $16.00 per Air package | Next Day Air and Next Day Air Early where available; not available with Saver |
| Demand Surcharge (UPS Next Day Air) | $1.35 (Oct. 25–Nov. 21, 2026); $2.50 (Nov. 22–Dec. 26, 2026); $1.35 (Dec. 27, 2026–Jan. 16, 2027) | Per package during the demand periods |
| Next Day Air Early outside service area | $10.00 | Early package sent outside the Early service area |
Shippers billed for more than 20,000 packages in any week since October 2025 can face larger demand surcharges under UPS’s higher-volume tables. For details on the home-delivery fee and Saturday service, see UPS Residential Surcharge and UPS Saturday Delivery.
Example: a 5 lb Next Day Air package, zone 5
At daily rates the transportation charge is $129.93. A 33.00% fuel surcharge adds $42.88, for $172.81. Add the $1.35 demand surcharge for packages shipped October 25 through November 21, 2026, and the $7.00 Residential Surcharge if it goes to a home (fuel can also apply to certain accessorial charges). This is a list-rate calculation, not a real invoice.
How to Pay Less for UPS Overnight Shipping
- Use Next Day Air Saver when end of day works. It is the cheapest UPS overnight service in every zone and weight shown above.
- Reserve Next Day Air Early for true early-morning needs. Its rates include a $30.00 surcharge.
- Keep documents under eight ounces in an Express Envelope so they bill at the Letter rate.
- Cut box size. Large, light boxes bill on dimensional weight.
- Classify addresses correctly. A business address billed as residential adds $7.00 plus fuel.
- Claim late deliveries. The UPS Service Guarantee is currently active for Next Day Air Early, Next Day Air and Next Day Air Saver.
- Compare carriers. See USPS vs UPS vs FedEx overnight rates.
What to Check on Your UPS Invoice
Confirm each package was billed at the right weight and zone, that Early packages show the rate and the $30.00 surcharge once, that residential surcharges only hit true residential addresses, that Saturday Delivery charges match packages you asked to have delivered on Saturday, and that late overnight deliveries were credited.
