UPS Next Day Air Letter Cost 2026: Overnight Envelope Rates by Zone

2026 UPS rate: a UPS Next Day Air letter costs $37.30 to $71.47 at daily rates (zones 2 to 8), Next Day Air Saver $36.00 to $66.89, and Next Day Air Early $67.30 to $101.47, before fuel and other surcharges.

2027 update: UPS Daily Rates for Ground, Air and International services rise an average net 5.9% effective December 21, 2026, but UPS has not yet published the detailed 2027 rates, so the figures below are 2026 rates. We will update this post when UPS publishes them; see our UPS 2027 rate increase guide. Source: UPS shipping rates, Important Updates.

Quick answer: UPS charges a flat "Letter" rate by zone for documents up to 8 ounces sent in a UPS Express Envelope. Next Day Air Saver (end of next business day) is the cheapest UPS overnight letter, Next Day Air (10:30 a.m. or later, depending on the address) costs a little more, and Next Day Air Early (8:00 a.m. to major cities) includes a $30 surcharge. Fuel, residential and other surcharges are added on top.

What Counts as a UPS "Letter"

The UPS rate guide limits the Letter rate to documents, correspondence and electronic media that weigh no more than eight ounces and travel in a UPS Express Envelope. The rules that change the price:

  • Over 8 ounces: a domestic Express Envelope over eight ounces is billed by weight, rounded up to the next whole pound. A 1 lb. Next Day Air package to zone 2 is $45.06 at daily rates, versus $37.30 for the letter.
  • Other contents: the Letter rate applies only to documents, correspondence and electronic media. UPS also says Express Envelopes are not recommended for electronic media containing sensitive personal information.
  • Drop Box limit: packages and UPS Express Envelopes worth more than $500 cannot go in a UPS Drop Box.

UPS Next Day Air Letter Rates by Zone (Daily Rates)

Daily rates apply if you have a scheduled UPS pickup or a UPS agreement that gives you daily rates. UPS numbers overnight zones in the 100s (zone 102 is local, 108 is cross-country for Next Day Air; Next Day Air Saver uses 132 to 138). The table maps them to the familiar zones 2 to 8.

ZoneNext Day Air EarlyNext Day AirNext Day Air Saver
Zone 2$67.30$37.30$36.00
Zone 3$74.92$44.92$43.70
Zone 4$86.52$56.52$53.62
Zone 5$90.46$60.46$57.59
Zone 6$91.79$61.79$58.75
Zone 7$98.56$68.56$64.13
Zone 8$101.47$71.47$66.89

Letters to metro Alaska and Hawaii (zone 124) are $83.24 by Next Day Air. The Next Day Air Early letter rate to zone 124, which covers metro Alaska, is $113.24. Puerto Rico (zone 125) is $60.52 by Next Day Air.

Why Next Day Air Early costs $30 more

The Next Day Air Early table already includes a $30.00 surcharge, and UPS bills it as two separate charges: the Next Day Air Early rate and the $30.00 surcharge. If you see two lines for one Early letter on your invoice, that is why. UPS can also charge $10.00 when an Early package is sent to a destination outside the Early service area.

Retail Rates: Shipping Without a Daily-Rate Account

UPS says retail rates apply if you ship from a UPS location, don't have an account or scheduled pickup, or ship occasionally with a payment card. The retail guide also covers packages processed at The UPS Store, though UPS notes that third-party retailer charges for value-added services and other surcharges may vary.

ZoneNext Day Air EarlyNext Day AirNext Day Air Saver
Zone 2$64.80$34.80$33.91
Zone 3$71.29$41.29$40.44
Zone 4$82.31$52.31$50.53
Zone 5$85.15$55.15$53.93
Zone 6$86.17$56.17$55.52
Zone 7$91.07$61.07$59.17
Zone 8$93.83$63.83$63.14

In the current editions, the retail Letter rates are a few dollars below the daily Letter rates in every zone. Daily-rate accounts usually carry negotiated discounts that change the comparison, so check your own rates in UPS shipping software before assuming either is cheaper.

Surcharges That Add to a UPS Overnight Letter

The rate guide says its rates do not include a fuel surcharge. These are the add-ons most likely to apply to a letter:

Charge2026 amountWhen it applies
Fuel surcharge (Domestic Air)33.00% for the week of Oct. 26, 2026Every Next Day Air Early, Next Day Air and Saver shipment; changes every Monday

Saturday Delivery$16.00 per Air packageAvailable with Next Day Air and Next Day Air Early; not available with Saver

Sources: UPS fuel surcharge history, the daily rate guide's Other Charges pages and the UPS Demand Surcharges notice (August 26, 2026 update). Higher-volume shippers can see larger demand surcharges on residential air packages under UPS's volume tables.

Example: a Next Day Air letter, zone 2

At daily rates, $37.30 plus a 33.00% fuel surcharge is about $49.61. Sent to a home, add the $7.00 Residential Surcharge (fuel also applies to certain accessorial charges), plus the $1.35 Demand Surcharge for shipments tendered through November 21, 2026. The same letter by Next Day Air Saver starts at $36.00, or about $47.88 with fuel.

2027 Rate Change

UPS has announced that daily rates for UPS Ground, Air and international services will increase an average net 5.9% effective December 21, 2026, with detailed rate previews to come. The daily Letter rates in this article will change on that date.

How to Overnight a Letter With UPS for Less

  • Use Next Day Air Saver when the afternoon works. It is the cheapest UPS overnight letter in every zone and still arrives the next business day where it is offered.
  • Reserve Next Day Air Early for true 8 a.m. needs. Its letter rate is $30 or more above Next Day Air in every zone.
  • Keep it under 8 ounces. Going over turns the letter into a 1 lb. package rate.
  • Skip Saturday delivery unless it matters. It adds $16 per package.
  • Classify addresses correctly. A business address billed as residential adds $7.00 plus fuel.
  • Compare USPS for documents. A USPS Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelope is $38.25 with no fuel surcharge (USPS Notice 123, effective October 4, 2026; a temporary price that runs until January 17, 2027), but it is a 1 to 3 day service by 6 p.m. See the overnight price comparison.
  • Claim late deliveries. The UPS Service Guarantee is currently active for Next Day Air Early, Next Day Air and Next Day Air Saver, so late letters can be refunded. See how to claim a UPS late delivery refund.

What to Check on Your UPS Invoice

Confirm each letter was billed at the Letter rate rather than a weight rate, that residential surcharges only hit true residential addresses, that Early shipments show the rate and $30.00 surcharge once, and that late Next Day Air deliveries were credited.
