FedEx Residential Delivery Charge 2026: $6.45–$6.95 Per Package Explained
2026 FedEx rate: The Residential Delivery Charge is $6.45 per package for FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx International Ground, and $6.95 per package for FedEx Express services such as Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, 2Day and Express Saver.
Quick answer: FedEx adds a residential delivery charge to any package addressed to a home or private residence, including a business run out of a home. FedEx decides whether an address is residential, and the charge applies on top of the base rate and before fuel surcharge. It is one of the most common lines on a FedEx invoice and one of the most frequently misapplied.
If your invoices show residential charges on deliveries to offices, warehouses or storefronts, a carrier invoice audit can recover the overcharges and flag the addresses FedEx has misclassified.

How It Appears on Your FedEx Invoice
On a FedEx invoice this charge appears as “Residential Delivery Chg.”, the abbreviation for the Residential Delivery Charge in FedEx’s list of invoice fee names. During peak season you may also see a separate “Demand — Residential Delivery Charge” line on the same package.
What Is the FedEx Residential Delivery Charge?
The FedEx Residential Delivery Charge is a per-package fee for delivering to a home rather than a business. Residential stops cost carriers more: drivers make one or two drops per stop instead of many, routes are spread out, and deliveries often happen in the evening or on weekends. FedEx recovers that cost with a flat per-package charge.
According to the FedEx Service Guide, the charge applies to shipments addressed to a home or private residence, “including locations where a business is operated from a home,” and to any shipment where the shipper designated the address as a residence.
2026 FedEx Residential Delivery Charge Rates
| Service | 2026 Charge |
|---|---|
| FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery, FedEx International Ground | $6.45 per package |
| FedEx Express U.S. package services (Overnight, 2Day, Express Saver) | $6.95 per package |
| International package services (to Canada and U.S. import-rated) | $6.95 per shipment |
| U.S. Express Freight | $230 per shipment |
For multi-package shipments on FedEx Express Multiweight pricing, the charge is capped at $62.55 per shipment. On contract-only FedEx Ground Multiweight pricing, the cap is $58.05 per shipment. FedEx International Connect Plus shipments are not assessed a residential delivery fee.
What Triggers the Charge
- FedEx classifies the address as residential. FedEx uses its own address data, not your order system’s label. If FedEx says the address is a home, the charge applies.
- The shipper flags the address as residential. Many shipping systems mark every consumer order as residential by default, which is usually correct but sometimes isn’t.
- A home-based business. FedEx treats these as residential even if the recipient is a company.
- FedEx Home Delivery. Home Delivery is built for residences, so nearly every Home Delivery package carries the charge.
The Demand Residential Delivery Charge
During peak season FedEx adds a separate Demand — Residential Delivery Charge for large shippers. For the 2026–2027 peak it applies to enterprise customers shipping more than 20,000 residential and Ground Economy packages in a week, and the per-package amount depends on how far that week’s volume runs above the shipper’s June 2026 average. FedEx states that any contracted discount or cap on the regular residential charge does not apply to the demand version.
FedEx vs. UPS Residential Surcharge
| Carrier | Ground | Air / Express |
|---|---|---|
| FedEx | $6.45 | $6.95 |
| UPS | $6.50 | $7.00 |
The list rates are within five cents of each other, so the real difference comes from your contract. Residential surcharges are one of the most commonly discounted accessorials, and a shipper with heavy residential volume has leverage to negotiate them down or cap them. See the UPS residential surcharge guide for the UPS side.
How to Reduce or Recover Residential Charges
- Audit commercial deliveries. Pull every residential charge on an address you know is a business. Office parks, mixed-use buildings and retail locations are often misclassified. Each one is a $6.45–$6.95 overcharge plus the fuel surcharge applied to it.
- Check your shipping software defaults. If your system flags every order as residential, B2B orders get charged too.
- Offer pickup points. Shipping to a FedEx retail location for customer pickup can avoid the residential charge for customers willing to use it.
- Negotiate. If residential deliveries are a large share of your volume, negotiate a discount or per-package cap in your FedEx agreement.
- Compare carriers by lane. For light residential packages, compare the all-in cost against USPS, which does not charge a residential surcharge.
