FedEx Delivery Area Surcharge 2026: Commercial, Residential, Extended & Remote Rates
Shipping for a business? FedEx updates its DAS ZIP code list every year, and charges on ZIP codes that aren't on the current list are a common recovery. 2026 FedEx rate: The Delivery Area Surcharge is $4.45 commercial, $5.55 extended commercial, $6.60 residential, $8.80 extended residential and $16.75 remote per package, with $16.25 for Hawaii and $46 for Alaska.

Quick answer: FedEx adds a Delivery Area Surcharge (DAS) to packages going to ZIP codes it considers harder or more expensive to serve. The amount depends on the destination ZIP code’s tier (standard, extended or remote) and on whether the address is commercial or residential. A residential package to a DAS ZIP code pays both the DAS and the separate residential delivery charge.

DAS charges add up quickly for shippers with rural customers, and they are frequently billed on ZIP codes that aren’t on FedEx’s current list. A carrier invoice audit checks each charge against the published ZIP codes.

2026 rates: FedEx Service Guide, effective January 5, 2026 (updated September 11, 2026). Amounts are list rates before fuel surcharge.

How It Appears on Your FedEx Invoice

FedEx invoices show this charge by tier. FedEx’s list of invoice fee names lists these abbreviations:

  • “DAS Comm.” — Delivery Area Surcharge: Commercial ($4.45)
  • “DAS Resi.” — Delivery Area Surcharge: Residential ($6.60)
  • “DAS Extended Comm.” — Extended Commercial ($5.55)
  • “DAS Extended Resi.” — Extended Residential ($8.80)
  • “DAS Alaska Comm.” / “DAS Alaska Resi.” — Alaska ($46)
  • “DAS Hawaii Comm.” / “DAS Hawaii Resi.” — Hawaii ($16.25)

FedEx’s list doesn’t include the remote tier ($16.75), so look for a DAS line with “Remote” in it or a $16.75 DAS amount.

What Is the FedEx Delivery Area Surcharge?

The Delivery Area Surcharge is a per-package fee for deliveries to select U.S. ZIP codes, mostly rural and low-density areas where routes are longer and stops are further apart. FedEx also applies it to remote, sparsely populated or hard-to-reach areas of Alaska and Hawaii. FedEx publishes the list of affected ZIP codes on its rate-changes page and updates it each year.

2026 FedEx DAS Rates by Tier

TierPer PackageMax per Shipment (Multiweight)
Commercial$4.45$22.25
Extended Commercial$5.55$27.75
Residential$6.60$33.00
Extended Residential$8.80$44.00
Remote (commercial and residential)$16.75$83.75
Alaska (commercial and residential)$46.00Not applicable
Hawaii (commercial and residential)$16.25Not applicable
Intra-Hawaii (Intra-Oahu)$1.10Not applicable

The Alaska multiplier

FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery packages over 70 lbs going to an Alaska DAS ZIP code are charged 3.5 times the Alaska rate, which works out to $161 per package. FedEx also notes that delivery times to Alaska DAS ZIP codes are extended by 2–5 days.

How FedEx Decides Which Tier Applies

  1. Destination ZIP code. FedEx assigns each surcharged ZIP code a tier: standard, extended or remote.
  2. Address type. Commercial and residential addresses in the same ZIP code pay different amounts, except in the remote, Alaska and Hawaii tiers, where both pay the same.
  3. Pricing type. Multiweight shipments are capped per shipment, as shown above.

Because the residential tier depends on FedEx’s address classification, a misclassified business address in a DAS ZIP code gets overcharged twice: once on the DAS ($6.60 instead of $4.45) and once on the residential delivery charge.

FedEx vs. UPS Delivery Area Surcharge

TierFedEx 2026UPS 2026 (Ground)
Commercial$4.45$4.50
Residential$6.60$6.55
Extended commercial$5.55$5.70
Extended residential$8.80$8.85

The two carriers price the standard and extended tiers almost identically, but they use separate ZIP code lists. A ZIP code that is surcharged by one carrier may not be by the other, so routing rural volume by carrier ZIP list can save real money. See the UPS DAS guide for UPS’s structure.

How to Reduce FedEx DAS Charges

  • Check charges against the current ZIP list. FedEx changes the list annually. Charges on ZIP codes that aren’t on the current list should be credited.
  • Fix residential misclassification. A business address billed at the residential DAS tier is overcharged by $2.15 per package before fuel.
  • Compare carriers for rural ZIP codes. Use each carrier’s list to route packages where the other carrier doesn’t charge DAS.
  • Watch Alaska weights. Keeping Ground packages to Alaska at or under 70 lbs avoids the 3.5× multiplier.
  • Negotiate. DAS discounts are common in FedEx agreements for shippers with significant rural volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do “DAS Comm.”, “DAS Resi.” and “DAS Extended Resi.” mean on a FedEx invoice?

They are FedEx’s abbreviations for the Delivery Area Surcharge tiers: Commercial ($4.45), Residential ($6.60) and Extended Residential ($8.80) per package in 2026, charged when the destination ZIP code is on FedEx’s DAS list.

How much is the FedEx delivery area surcharge in 2026?

$4.45 commercial, $5.55 extended commercial, $6.60 residential, $8.80 extended residential, $16.75 remote, $16.25 Hawaii and $46 Alaska per package, before fuel surcharge.

Does FedEx charge DAS and the residential charge on the same package?

Yes. They are separate charges. A residential package to a DAS ZIP code pays both.

Where can I find the FedEx DAS ZIP code list?

FedEx publishes the current list on its rate-changes page at fedex.com. It changes every year, so check the list in effect on the ship date.

Why is the FedEx Alaska surcharge so high?

Alaska deliveries often require air or barge transport and long final-mile routes. FedEx charges $46 per package, and 3.5 times that for Ground and Home Delivery packages over 70 lbs.
