FedEx Additional Handling Surcharge – Dimensions 2026: $29.50–$40.75 by Zone
2026 FedEx rate: The Additional Handling Surcharge — Dimension is $29.50 in zone 2, $32.75 in zones 3–4, $38.50 in zones 5–6 and $40.75 in zones 7 and above, per package, for U.S. package services.
Quick answer: FedEx adds this surcharge to any package that is longer than 48 inches, wider than 30 inches on its second-longest side, more than 105 inches in length plus girth, or (since January 12, 2026) more than 10,368 cubic inches in volume. The package is also billed at a minimum of 40 lbs.
Oversized-box charges are easy to prevent once you know which SKUs trigger them, and they are often billed on wrong dimensions. A carrier invoice audit catches both.
2026 rates: FedEx Service Guide, effective January 5, 2026 (updated September 11, 2026). Amounts are list rates before fuel surcharge.
How It Appears on Your FedEx Invoice
On a FedEx invoice this appears as “Additional Handling”, the abbreviation for the Additional Handling Surcharge in FedEx’s list of invoice fee names. The same label is used whether the package was charged for dimensions, weight or packaging, so check the package’s billed dimensions and weight to see which trigger applied. In peak season, look for a separate “Demand — Additional Handling Surcharge” line too.
What Triggers the Dimension Surcharge
Under the FedEx Service Guide, a package is subject to the Additional Handling Surcharge for dimensions if it:
- measures more than 48 inches along its longest side;
- measures more than 30 inches along its second-longest side;
- measures more than 105 inches in length and girth combined (length + 2 × height + 2 × width); or
- measures more than 10,368 cubic inches (length × width × height), effective January 12, 2026.
The fourth trigger is new for 2026. A 24″ × 24″ × 19″ box (10,944 cubic inches) passes the length and girth tests but now triggers the surcharge on volume alone.
The 40-lb minimum billable weight
Packages that trigger the dimension surcharge are rated at the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight, with a 40-lb minimum. A large, light box therefore pays both the surcharge and a 40-lb transportation rate.
2026 Rates by Zone
| Zone | FedEx 2026 | UPS 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Zone 2 | $29.50 | $30.00 |
| Zones 3–4 | $32.75 | $33.25 |
| Zones 5–6 | $38.50 | $38.50 |
| Zones 7+ | $40.75 | $40.50 |
The zones 3–4 rate also applies to Intra-Alaska, Intra-Oahu and Intra-Hawaii shipments, and the zones 7+ rate applies to shipments from the U.S. to Puerto Rico. FedEx International package services pay a flat $29.50 per package. During peak season, FedEx adds a Demand — Additional Handling Surcharge on top ($8.80 to $11.85 per package for the 2026 peak).
How It Interacts With Other FedEx Surcharges
- Weight and packaging. FedEx has separate Additional Handling triggers for weight and packaging. The Service Guide doesn’t spell out how a package that meets more than one is billed, so if your invoice shows two Additional Handling charges on one package, ask FedEx to confirm the basis for each.
- Oversize. Packages over 96 inches long, 130 inches in length plus girth, 17,280 cubic inches or 110 lbs move into the much higher Oversize Charge.
- Shape changes. FedEx states that package shape and dimensions may change in transit and that it may adjust charges if they do. Soft or overstuffed cartons that bulge can cross a threshold.
How to Avoid the Dimension Surcharge
- Measure your carton library against all four triggers. Pay special attention to the new 10,368 cubic inch rule, which catches large cube-shaped boxes.
- Redesign packaging for long items. Keeping length to 48 inches or less and the second side to 30 inches or less avoids the charge entirely.
- Split shipments when a single large box can become two smaller ones.
- Audit FedEx dimensions. FedEx measures packages in its network. If billed dimensions don’t match your carton spec, dispute the charge.
- Negotiate. Shippers whose products are inherently large can negotiate discounts on Additional Handling.
