FedEx Oversize Charge 2026: $255–$330 Per Package and the 90-lb Minimum
2026 FedEx rate: The Oversize Charge is $255 in zone 2, $275 in zones 3–4, $320 in zones 5–6 and $330 in zones 7 and above, per package, for U.S. package services and FedEx Home Delivery. International package services pay $208.
Quick answer: FedEx applies the Oversize Charge to packages longer than 96 inches, larger than 130 inches in length plus girth, larger than 17,280 cubic inches, or heavier than 110 lbs. On top of the surcharge, the package is billed at a minimum of 90 lbs. It is FedEx’s equivalent of the UPS Large Package Surcharge.
Because a single inch can move a package into this charge, a carrier invoice audit that checks billed dimensions against your carton specs often finds recoverable overcharges.

How It Appears on Your FedEx Invoice
On a FedEx invoice this appears as “Oversize Charge”, per FedEx’s list of invoice fee names. During peak season you may also see “Demand — Oversize Charge” on the same package.
What Triggers the Oversize Charge
A package is subject to the Oversize Charge if it:
- measures more than 96 inches along its longest side;
- measures more than 130 inches in length and girth (length + 2 × height + 2 × width);
- measures more than 17,280 cubic inches (length × width × height), effective January 12, 2026; or
- has an actual weight greater than 110 lbs, effective January 12, 2026.
The cubic volume and weight triggers are new for 2026. Before them, a dense 120-lb box with modest dimensions would have paid the Additional Handling weight surcharge. Now it pays the Oversize Charge.
The 90-lb minimum billable weight
Oversize packages are rated at the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight, subject to a 90-lb minimum. A 40-lb oversize package is billed as if it weighed 90 lbs, plus the surcharge. International shipments are not subject to the 90-lb minimum.
2026 Rates
| Zone | FedEx Oversize Charge 2026 |
|---|---|
| Zone 2 | $255 |
| Zones 3–4 | $275 |
| Zones 5–6 | $320 |
| Zones 7+ | $330 |
| International package services | $208 |
During the 2026 peak, the Demand — Oversize Charge adds $95.75 per package from September 28 to November 22, $117.25 from November 23 to December 27, and $95.75 from December 28 through January 17, 2027. A zone 7 oversize package shipped in mid-December can carry $447.25 in surcharges before fuel.
FedEx Oversize vs. UPS Large Package
UPS applies its Large Package Surcharge at similar size limits (over 96 inches long or over 130 inches in length plus girth) starting at $219.50 per commercial package in 2026, also with a 90-lb minimum billable weight. FedEx’s Oversize Charge starts higher, at $255, and adds cubic volume and weight triggers. For bulky products, compare both carriers’ all-in cost by zone. See the UPS Large Package guide.
The Next Threshold: Unauthorized Packages
FedEx Ground packages longer than 108 inches, larger than 165 inches in length plus girth, or heavier than 150 lbs are unauthorized and charged $1,875 per package. The gap between the two charges is steep, so keep a margin below those limits.
How to Avoid the Oversize Charge
- Measure length plus girth, not just length. A 60″ × 18″ × 18″ box is only 60 inches long but 132 inches in length plus girth.
- Check the new cubic limit. A 30″ × 24″ × 24″ box is 17,280 cubic inches, right at the limit. Any larger triggers the charge.
- Keep packages at or under 110 lbs. The new weight trigger catches heavy compact items that used to pay only Additional Handling.
- Ship as freight when it makes sense. For items that will always be oversize, compare LTL or FedEx Express Freight.
- Audit billed dimensions. Packages near the limits are often mismeasured. Dispute charges that don’t match your carton spec.
