Cheapest Way to Ship Clothes and Shoes in 2026 (Poly Mailer vs Box)

2026 USPS rate: The cheapest way to ship clothes is usually USPS Ground Advantage in a poly mailer. A T-shirt up to 8 oz costs $8.55 (Zone 2) to $10.20 (Zone 8) at retail, and a 3 lb pair of shoes costs $12.50 to $23.15, under USPS prices effective October 4, 2026.
Quick answer: Ship light clothing in a poly mailer by USPS Ground Advantage and keep it at or under 8 oz, where the price is the same as 4 oz. USPS only uses dimensional weight on parcels larger than 1 cubic foot, while UPS and FedEx apply it to every package, so a 14 x 10 x 5 in. shoe box that weighs 3 lb is billed as 6 lb at UPS and FedEx. For a heavy bundle going far, a Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box ($25.80) can beat Ground Advantage retail if the clothes fit.

How Much It Costs to Ship a Shirt
Example: one T-shirt folded into a 10 x 13 in. poly mailer about 1 in. thick, 6 to 8 oz total. At UPS and FedEx the mailer’s dimensional weight is 1 lb, so it bills at the 1 lb rate.
| Service | Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage, up to 8 oz | $8.55 | $9.35 | $10.20 |
| USPS Ground Advantage, over 8 oz up to 15.999 oz | $10.45 | $11.70 | $13.65 |

| UPS Ground, 1 lb + $6.50 residential | $18.49 | $20.60 | $21.53 |
UPS does not publish Ground Saver prices under 1 lb; those are set in each shipper’s contract.
The 8 oz line matters. Ground Advantage retail charges the same at 4 oz and 8 oz, then jumps to the 15.999 oz price. One ounce over 8 oz adds $1.90 in Zone 2, $2.35 in Zone 5 and $3.45 in Zone 8. Weigh it packed.
How Much It Costs to Ship Shoes
Example: a pair of shoes in a 14 x 10 x 5 in. box, 3 lb packed. That box is 700 cubic inches, under USPS’s 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches) threshold, so USPS charges actual weight. UPS and FedEx divide 700 by 139 and round up, so they bill 6 lb.
| Service | Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage, 3 lb | $12.50 | $15.70 | $23.15 |
| Priority Mail, 3 lb | $13.80 | $19.05 | $28.10 |
| FedEx Ground Economy (contract), 6 lb + $1.15 | $15.32 | $19.75 | $22.85 |
| UPS Ground Saver (contract), 6 lb | $15.44 | $20.17 | $23.27 |
| FedEx Home Delivery, 6 lb + $6.45 | $20.62 | $25.05 | $28.15 |
| UPS Ground, 6 lb + $6.50 | $20.74 | $25.24 | $28.23 |
At 3 lb actual weight, UPS Ground would be $13.38 to $19.14 before the residential surcharge. Before fuel, FedEx Ground Economy at Zone 8 ($22.85) is $0.30 less than Ground Advantage retail, but FedEx adds a weekly fuel surcharge on top and the service is contract-only. This box does not fit a Medium or Large Flat Rate Box.
How Much It Costs to Ship a Box of Clothes
Example: 5 lb of clothes in a 16 x 12 x 6 in. box (1,152 cubic inches). USPS charges 5 lb. UPS and FedEx bill 9 lb dimensional weight.
| Service | Zone 2 | Zone 5 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage, 5 lb | $14.35 | $18.85 | $27.45 |
| Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Box (if it fits) | $25.80 | $25.80 | $25.80 |
| Priority Mail, 5 lb | $15.75 | $24.20 | $39.00 |
| FedEx Ground Economy (contract), 9 lb + $1.15 | $16.79 | $21.06 | $25.90 |
| UPS Ground Saver (contract), 9 lb | $16.98 | $21.55 | $26.46 |
| FedEx Home Delivery, 9 lb + $6.45 | $22.09 | $26.36 | $31.20 |
| UPS Ground, 9 lb + $6.50 | $22.19 | $26.48 | $31.17 |
In Zone 8 the Medium Flat Rate Box is $1.65 less than Ground Advantage retail, but the Medium Flat Rate Box is 11 x 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 in. (or 13-5/8 x 11-7/8 x 3-3/8 in.) inside, so it only works if the clothes fit. The Large Flat Rate Box ($36.10) costs more than Ground Advantage retail at every zone in this example.
Poly Mailer or Box?
For soft clothing, a poly mailer is usually cheaper: it weighs less than a box and stays small.
- USPS dimensional weight starts above 1 cubic foot. Above 1,728 cubic inches, Priority Mail and Ground Advantage charge the greater of actual weight or L x W x H divided by 139. See USPS Dimensional Weight 2026.
- UPS and FedEx use dimensional weight on every package, also with a 139 divisor at list rates. Check your boxes with our dimensional weight calculator.
- Keep it flat and snug. USPS’s nonstandard characteristics fee ($4.50 on Ground Advantage and Priority Mail) lists “other mailable items (including polybags) with contents that may shift, or cause the parcel to roll.”
- Watch length. USPS adds a fee for parcels over 22 in. long; see USPS Nonstandard Fees 2026.
Contract Options: UPS Ground Saver and FedEx Ground Economy
Both are economy residential services that need a carrier contract. UPS Ground Saver (formerly SurePost) list rates start at $13.00 for 1 lb to Zone 2. The rate sheet has no Residential Surcharge line, and UPS says delivery typically takes UPS Ground plus one to two business days. FedEx Ground Economy (formerly SmartPost) charges one flat rate for 1 to 16 oz ($11.99 in Zone 2 to $15.01 in Zone 8) plus a $1.15 Delivery and Returns Surcharge, with delivery typically in 2 to 7 business days. Both add fuel, and contract discounts change the math.
How to Ship Clothes for Less
