How Much Does It Cost to Ship Luggage? 2026 UPS, FedEx and USPS Rates

How Much Does It Cost to Ship Luggage? 2026 UPS, FedEx and USPS Rates

2026 cost to ship luggage: a checked suitcase packed in a 30 x 21 x 13 in box (47 lb) is billed as 59 lb and costs $29.97 to $97.84 by FedEx Ground or $30.28 to $97.13 by UPS Ground (Zones 2, 5 and 8, base rates before fuel and residential fees). A boxed carry-on (24 x 16 x 11 in) costs $24.01 to $64.07 by UPS or FedEx Ground. Ship the same bags without a box and UPS and FedEx can add an Additional Handling – Packaging fee of $26.50 to $33.75.

Quick answer: UPS and FedEx Ground are the cheapest published way to ship a full-size suitcase in all three zones, even after fuel and the residential surcharge. A suitcase with wheels and handles that is not inside a corrugated box meets the Additional Handling – Packaging rules at both carriers, and that fee costs more than the extra dimensional weight a box adds. USPS Ground Advantage adds size fees and costs more in these examples. Bags over 50 lb add an Additional Handling – Weight fee of $46 or more.

2027 update: UPS Daily Rates for Ground, Air and International rise an average net 5.9% on December 21, 2026, when UPS Additional Handling – Packaging becomes $29.25 to $36.75 and the Ground residential surcharge $7.10. FedEx list rates rise an average 5.9% on January 4, 2027, with the U.S. packaging fee at $28.50 to $36.25 and the Ground residential charge at $6.90. USPS holiday prices end January 17, 2027. Suitcase sizes and billable weight

These are example sizes: a carry-on (22 x 14 x 9 in) and a medium checked suitcase (28 x 19 x 11 in), shipped as-is or in a box about 2 in larger each way. Check your own bag or box in our dimensional weight calculator.

Checked bag in a 30 x 21 x 13 in box47 lb8,1908,190 ÷ 139 = 58.92, rounded up to 59 lb59 lb

UPS and FedEx bill the greater of actual and dimensional weight on every package, rounding each side up to the next inch and dividing by 139. USPS also divides by 139 for parcels over 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches), rounding each side to the nearest inch (USPS Dimensional Weight 2026: The New 139 Divisor Explained). None of the examples is longer than 48 in, wider than 30 in or over 105 in in length plus girth, so the Additional Handling – Dimensions fee does not apply.

Cost to ship a checked suitcase

The boxed suitcase bills 14 lb heavier than the bare one, but at UPS it still costs $25.12 less to Zone 2, $27.53 less to Zone 5 and $20.13 less to Zone 8, because the box removes the packaging fee. USPS adds two nonstandard fees: $4.50 for a parcel longer than 22 in (up to 30 in) and $21.00 for one larger than 2 cubic feet (3,456 cubic inches). Both apply to the 30 x 21 x 13 in box (USPS Nonstandard Fees 2026: Over 22 in, Over 30 in and 2 Cubic Feet).

The snug 23 x 15 x 10 in box is 3,450 cubic inches, just under the 3,456 cubic inch line, so USPS charges only the $4.50 length fee and bills 25 lb. It only works for a bag that fits with about half an inch to spare on each side.

Boxed or unboxed: the Additional Handling – Packaging rule

Both carriers treat an unboxed suitcase as non-standard packaging. The UPS guide lists any article "not fully encased in a corrugated cardboard shipping container", outer containers of canvas, leather or hard or soft plastic, and packages that have "wheels, casters, handles or straps". The FedEx Service Guide uses almost the same wording. The fee is per package:

CarrierZone 2Zone 5Zone 8
UPS Additional Handling – Packaging$26.75$33.25$33.75
FedEx Additional Handling – Packaging$26.50$33.00$33.75

UPS and FedEx do not apply the 40 lb minimum billable weight to packaging-based Additional Handling, only to the dimension-based version. A duffel or a bag in a plastic sack is treated the same way. With fuel and residential fees: cost to a home

FedEx Home Delivery, boxed carry-on$39.37$55.50$90.75
USPS Ground Advantage, carry-on in snug box$40.70$65.15$103.60

UPS and FedEx estimates add the residential surcharge ($6.50 UPS Ground, $6.45 FedEx Home Delivery) and apply the fuel surcharge in effect November 3, 2026 (30.25% UPS Ground, 29.25% FedEx Ground) to the whole charge. Demand and delivery area surcharges are excluded. USPS prices include home delivery and have no fuel surcharge. On these numbers FedEx Home Delivery is the cheapest option for both boxed bags in all three zones, with UPS Ground close behind; USPS costs more in every case. If you ship at The UPS Store, you pay UPS Retail Rates instead of daily rates, and UPS does not add its Ground fuel surcharge to retail-rate Ground packages from the 48 states.

How to keep the cost down

  • Box it. A corrugated box removes the packaging fee, which is worth more than the extra dimensional weight in every zone shown above.
  • Use the smallest box that fits. Every 139 cubic inches adds a billable pound. For USPS, staying at or under 3,456 cubic inches avoids the $21.00 volume fee.
  • Stay at 50 lb or less. Over 50 lb actual weight, UPS adds Additional Handling – Weight ($46.50 to $58.75) and FedEx $46.00 to $58.75 (What Does UPS Additional Handling Weight Charge Mean? $46.50 Fee (2026)). Split the load into two bags if you are close.
  • Check drop-off limits. UPS Access Point locations do not take packages over 44 lb or longer than 38 in, so the 47 lb boxed suitcase has to go to a UPS Store or a UPS Customer Center, or be picked up.
  • Ship to a business address if you can. The residential surcharge applies only to deliveries to a home.

Shipping luggage ahead of a trip

UPS Ground and FedEx Ground deliver in one to five business days depending on distance, so allow about a week for a cross-country bag. Ship earlier around holidays (Holiday Shipping Deadlines 2026: USPS, UPS and FedEx Compared). If you are short on time, compare two-day air prices (2-Day Shipping Cost 2026: UPS 2nd Day Air vs FedEx 2Day vs USPS). Before you ship to a hotel, ask whether it holds guest packages, and put a copy of the address and your phone number inside the bag.

Declared value for a suitcase

UPS limits its liability to $100 per package unless you declare a higher value. UPS charges $1.70 per $100 of the total value for declarations over $300, so a $1,000 bag and contents costs $17.00. FedEx charges $1.65 per $100 of total value for declarations over $300, or $16.50 for $1,000. Declared value is not insurance and you still have to prove the loss; keep receipts and photos (What Does UPS Declared Value Mean? Cost per $100 & Limits (2026); FedEx Declared Value Fee 2026: Cost per $100, Limits and What It Covers).
