How to Overnight a Check or Documents: 2026 Costs and Carrier Rules

How to Overnight a Check or Documents: 2026 Costs and Carrier Rules

2026 overnight document rates: a USPS Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelope is $38.25 at the Post Office ($33.46 commercial), a UPS Next Day Air Letter is $37.30 to $71.47 and a FedEx Priority Overnight Envelope starts at $37.27.

Quick answer: To overnight a check or signed documents, use a carrier envelope service: USPS Priority Mail Express, UPS Next Day Air in a UPS Express Envelope, or FedEx Priority or Standard Overnight in a FedEx Envelope. UPS accepts checks but not cash, money orders or other negotiable instruments. Add a signature option if you need proof of who received it, and don't send cash with any of these services.

If you only need the cheapest overnight price for a package, see our overnight shipping rate comparison. This guide covers the rules that matter when the envelope holds a check, a money order or original documents.

The USPS prices in Notice 123 are temporary. The Postal Service's Governors' Decision No. 26-7 set them from October 4, 2026 until January 17, 2027, when prices are scheduled to return to the previously approved levels unless the Governors act again. Check Notice 123 before you mail after that date.

UPS and FedEx prices above are published list rates. Your account may have discounts, and fuel surcharges apply on top. A residential delivery adds a surcharge: $7.00 for UPS Air services in the 2026 UPS rate guide, and $6.95 per package for FedEx Express services per the FedEx 2026 surcharge table.

What qualifies for the letter or envelope rate

The UPS 2026 rate guide says the Letter rate applies only to documents, correspondence and electronic media of eight ounces or less sent in a UPS Express Envelope. A UPS Express Envelope over eight ounces is billed at the rate for its weight. FedEx's 2026 list rates show the FedEx Envelope rate for envelopes up to 8 oz. A single check or a short contract fits easily. A thick closing package may not, so weigh it.

Can You Overnight a Check? Carrier Rules on Checks, Cash and Money Orders

UPS: Section 3.1 of the 2026 UPS Tariff/Terms and Conditions of Service lists "coins, cash, currency, bonds, postage stamps, money orders, and negotiable instruments (such as drafts, bills of exchange, or promissory notes, but excluding checks)" as articles of unusual value that UPS does not accept. Checks are expressly carved out, so a check can go by UPS. A money order cannot.

FedEx: FedEx's declared value page names cash or currency as a prohibited item and says that if you declare a value for prohibited items and they are lost or damaged, you will not be reimbursed. We could not confirm FedEx's 2026 wording on money orders and checks from its terms, so ask FedEx before shipping a money order with them.

USPS: Priority Mail Express includes tracking and up to $100 of insurance with most shipments, and it delivers to PO Boxes. UPS does not: its terms (section 14) say UPS does not deliver to a P.O. Box, and a package addressed to one may be delayed, loses any service guarantee and is subject to an address correction charge. If the recipient only has a PO Box, USPS is the practical overnight choice.

Signature Options: Proof of Who Received It

FedExDirect or Indirect Signature Required$7.60

For FedEx, packages with a declared value of $500 or more to or within the U.S. get Direct Signature Required automatically, with no extra charge, per FedEx's declared value page. FedEx's 2027 surcharge table raises Direct Signature to $8.15, Indirect to $8.05 and Adult to $10.60 effective January 4, 2027. For a check or a signed contract, Direct (FedEx) or Signature Required (UPS) is usually enough. Indirect allows a neighbor or a signed door tag to release the package, which defeats the purpose for sensitive documents.

Declared Value and Value Limits for Documents

Carrier liability is limited unless you declare a higher value, and declaring value costs money:

  • UPS: no charge up to $100; $5.10 for $100.01 to $300; $1.70 per $100 of total value above $300 (2026 rate guide). See UPS declared value.
  • FedEx: first $100 included; $4.95 for $100.01 to $300; $1.65 per $100 above $300 in 2026, rising to $5.40 and $1.80 on January 4, 2027 (FedEx surcharge tables). See FedEx declared value.

UPS also caps value by how you tender. Its 2026 rate guide says packages and UPS Express Envelopes worth more than $500 cannot go in a UPS Drop Box. Its terms (section 3.2) say a package processed in a UPS shipping system and handed to a driver or UPS Customer Center with a value over $1,000 needs a UPS high-value shipment summary signed by the driver or counter representative. If you are sending something valuable, hand it over in person and get that summary.

Declared value does not make a carrier pay for an item it prohibits. With FedEx, a declared value on cash or currency is not reimbursed. With UPS, cash and money orders are not accepted at all.

How to Overnight a Check or Documents: Step by Step

  1. Check the cutoff. Overnight only works if the envelope is accepted before the day's pickup or drop-off cutoff.
  2. Use the carrier's envelope. USPS Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelope, UPS Express Envelope or FedEx Envelope. Keep it under 8 oz. for UPS and FedEx envelope rates.
  3. Use a street address for UPS and FedEx. Use USPS if you must ship to a PO Box.
  4. Add a signature option if the recipient needs to confirm receipt or you need proof for a deadline.
  5. Declare value only where it helps. For originals that are hard to replace, declare value within the carrier limits above.
  6. Keep the tracking number and share it with the recipient.

What Not to Send Overnight

  • Cash or currency (UPS and FedEx both list it as prohibited).
  • Money orders, bonds or other negotiable instruments by UPS (checks are allowed).
  • Anything over $500 in value through a UPS Drop Box.
  • Electronic media holding sensitive personal data in a plain envelope. The UPS rate guide recommends against Letter and Express Envelope packaging for that and offers a UPS Express Hard Pak - Secure.
