FedEx Delivery Signature Options 2026: Indirect, Direct and Adult Signature Fees
2026 FedEx rate: Indirect Signature Required is $7.60, Direct Signature Required is $7.60 and Adult Signature Required is $10 per package for U.S. package services and FedEx International Ground.
Quick answer: FedEx offers three Delivery Signature Options. Indirect lets someone at the address, a neighbor or a signed door tag release the package (residential only). Direct requires someone at the delivery address to sign. Adult requires a signer 21 or older with government-issued ID. FedEx charges the fee whenever you select an option, even if a signature isn’t obtained.
Signature settings left on by default are a common source of unnecessary cost. A carrier invoice audit shows which shipments carry signature fees and whether they need them.

How It Appears on Your FedEx Invoice
On a FedEx invoice all three options appear under one label, “Delivery Signature Options”, per FedEx’s list of invoice fee names. The amount tells you which one was used: $7.60 for Indirect or Direct, $10 for Adult.
The Three FedEx Signature Options
| Option | Who Can Sign | 2026 Fee | Multiweight Max |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indirect Signature Required | Someone at the address, a neighbor, or the recipient by signing a door tag. Residential addresses only (U.S. and Canada). | $7.60 | $53.20 |
| Direct Signature Required | Someone at the delivery address | $7.60 | $53.20 |
| Adult Signature Required | Someone 21 or older at the address with government-issued photo ID | $10.00 | $70.00 |
International package services (other than International Ground) are charged the same amounts per shipment rather than per package. When you process a multiple-package shipment together in a FedEx shipping system, the option you choose applies to every package in it.
Rules That Affect the Fee
- You pay even without a signature. FedEx assesses the delivery signature charge if you request the option, even if a signature is not obtained, the option isn’t available, or FedEx can’t provide a copy of the signature.
- Residential packages may be released without a signature unless you choose a signature option.
- Indirect isn’t available for business addresses. It applies only to residential deliveries in the U.S. and Canada.
- Age-restricted products must use Adult Signature Required. FedEx requires it for any product age-restricted by law.
- Hold at Location: Indirect and Direct charges may not apply, but Adult Signature charges do.
Automatic Direct Signature on High-Value Packages
For U.S. packages with a declared value of $500 or more, FedEx defaults to Direct Signature Required and does not charge the Direct Signature fee for those packages. The shipper can instead choose FedEx Authenticated Delivery, which uses a QR code at delivery and costs $20 per package.
FedEx vs. UPS Signature Fees
| Service | FedEx 2026 | UPS 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Standard / Direct signature | $7.60 | $7.70 |
| Adult signature | $10.00 | $9.35 |
FedEx is 10 cents cheaper for a standard signature and 65 cents more for an adult signature. See the UPS Adult Signature guide.
How to Avoid Paying for Signatures You Don’t Need
- Audit default settings. Shipping software and 3PL profiles often apply a signature option to every package.
- Set rules by order value and product. Require signatures only above a value threshold or for theft-prone or age-restricted items.
- Use Indirect for residential packages that need some proof. It’s the same price as Direct but more likely to succeed on the first attempt.
- Don’t pay for Direct on $500+ declared value packages. FedEx applies it by default without the fee.
- Reserve Adult Signature for age-restricted goods where it’s required.
