Free Shipping Boxes and Supplies from USPS, UPS and FedEx (2026): What You Can Get and the Rules

USPS, UPS and FedEx all give away shipping boxes, but each carrier's free boxes and envelopes are only for its own premium services. USPS Priority Mail and Flat Rate boxes cost $0.00 on store.usps.com and ship free, but may be used only for Priority Mail. UPS Express boxes need a UPS.com login, and FedEx Express boxes need a FedEx account to order online (or can be picked up in store); neither may be used for UPS Ground or FedEx Ground. At November 2026 holiday retail prices, the Flat Rate boxes cost $14.65 (Small), $25.80 (Medium) and $36.10 (Large) to ship.
Quick answer: Free carrier boxes save you money when you are already paying for that carrier's faster service. If you want the cheapest service (USPS Ground Advantage, UPS Ground or FedEx Ground), you have to use your own box. A free Flat Rate box beats Ground Advantage mostly on heavy packages going a long way. You can't put a USPS box on a UPS or FedEx shipment, and you can't put a Priority Mail box on Ground Advantage.

USPS: free Priority Mail and Flat Rate boxes
The free supplies section of the USPS online store (store.usps.com) listed 47 free items on November 4, 2026, all priced at $0.00. They include Priority Mail Flat Rate envelopes (regular, legal, padded and small), the Small, Medium, side-loading Medium and Large Flat Rate Boxes, the APO/FPO Flat Rate Box, Priority Mail poly envelopes, Priority Mail Express Flat Rate envelopes, a military care kit, and rolls of Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express labels.
How to order and how long it takes
- Pick the item and the format. The Medium Flat Rate Box, for example, comes as a single box, a 10-pack or a 25-pack, and each format has its own quantity cap (5 for single boxes) (USPS product page).
- Shipping is free. The store says to allow 5 to 7 business days for in-stock items to be shipped, and that free supplies travel by USPS Ground Advantage, arriving within 2 to 5 days based on distance.
- Your local Post Office fills orders of 1 to 5 Flat Rate supplies. If it can't fill the order within 1 to 2 days, a USPS distribution center ships it instead.
- The store doesn't ship outside the United States, but it does ship to APO/FPO/DPO addresses and U.S. territories.
The rule: Priority Mail boxes are only for Priority Mail
The USPS product page puts it simply: Flat Rate envelopes and boxes "are free when you pay for USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate shipping service" and "may only be used to ship via Priority Mail Flat Rate."
The binding version is in the Domestic Mail Manual, section 601.6.1 (DMM 601):
"All USPS-produced packaging (including Flat-Rate packaging) must be used only for the applicable product (e.g., Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail). The mailer of any matter mailed in USPS-produced packaging, regardless of how the packaging is reconfigured or how markings may be obliterated, must pay the appropriate product price."
So turning a Priority Mail box inside out or covering the logo doesn't make it a Ground Advantage box. Whatever goes out in it pays the Priority Mail price. The same section says USPS-produced packaging must not be used for mailable hazardous materials or live animals, except that USPS Ground Advantage and USPS Connect Local packaging may be used for mailable hazmat. DMM 123.1.4 adds that only USPS-produced Flat Rate envelopes and boxes qualify for Flat Rate prices (DMM 123).
UPS: free boxes need a UPS.com login, and reorders depend on your shipping activity
UPS's supplies page (UPS shipping supplies) offers UPS boxes, Express envelopes, label pouches, forms and labels. Its FAQ says:
- Account: "a UPS.com username is required to place supply orders on UPS.com."
- Quantities: "Item quantity per order may be limited. Supplies available for reorder are based on your recent shipping volume."
- Delivery: "Orders typically arrive within a few business days."
UPS's Customer Supplies Policy, dated November 2025 on the same page, says new customers get an initial allocation of free supplies, and after that eligibility "will depend on shipping activity and supplies usage." There are three access levels: Full Access, Limited Access (general supplies only, nothing intended only for UPS Express shipments), and No Access to ordering supplies through UPS.com. If your access is restricted, UPS says to contact Customer Service or your Account Executive.
The rule: UPS Express packaging isn't for UPS Ground
Section 9 of the UPS Tariff/Terms and Conditions of Service, effective April 17, 2026 (UPS Tariff), says:
"UPS Express® Envelopes, UPS Express® Pak, UPS Express® Boxes, UPS Express® Tubes, UPS 10 KG Box and UPS 25 KG Box packaging may not be used for UPS® Ground, UPS® Standard, UPS 3 Day Select®, or UPS Worldwide Expedited® Shipments."
The same section says UPS-provided materials are "provided solely for the use of UPS Shippers to obtain UPS services," and that shippers may not sell them. Section 3.1 of the same tariff treats packages tendered in violation of Section 9 as prohibited articles. UPS may return them at the shipper's expense, charge an additional fee listed in the UPS Rates, or suspend the shipper's services or discounts. In practice, UPS Express boxes go with Next Day Air, 2nd Day Air and similar air services. For UPS Ground, use your own box.
FedEx: free Express packaging and One Rate
The FedEx supplies page (FedEx shipping supplies) says that when you use expedited FedEx services, "Envelopes, paks, poly bags, boxes, and tubes are complimentary." You order them by logging in with a FedEx account. The FedEx How to Pack guide also lists 1.800.463.3339 (say "order shipping supplies").
The rule: FedEx Express packaging is for FedEx Express only
The FedEx How to Pack guide (FedEx How to Pack) says: "Use FedEx Express packaging for FedEx Express package shipments only; any other use is prohibited." FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery shipments need your own box. FedEx's packaging acceptance chart (quick reference) marks FedEx Express envelopes, paks, boxes and tubes "No" for FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx International Ground. It also says FedEx boxes and tubes can go by FedEx Express Saver only when shipped at One Rate. The FedEx sources quoted here don't state a specific penalty for misuse.
FedEx One Rate
FedEx One Rate is FedEx's flat-rate option, and it is the one case where you must use FedEx packaging. FedEx's shipping FAQ says, "The only time you have to use FedEx packaging is when you use FedEx One Rate" (FedEx FAQs). The One Rate page (FedEx One Rate) says to order your complimentary flat-rate packaging on fedex.com or pick it up in store. Envelopes must weigh under 10 lbs and boxes, paks and tubes under 50 lbs. One Rate covers FedEx Express services from FedEx Express Saver through FedEx First Overnight. On November 4, 2026, the page listed a FedEx Envelope at $12.75 by Express Saver or 2Day (rates effective June 26, 2026).
Can you use USPS boxes for UPS or FedEx?
No. DMM 601.6.1 limits USPS-produced packaging to the USPS product it was made for, and UPS's and FedEx's free boxes are limited to their own air services. The same goes across carriers: a UPS Express box doesn't belong on a FedEx shipment. All three carriers accept a plain box you supply yourself, and that's what you need for the ground services.
USPS Flat Rate prices (temporary holiday prices)
USPS is charging temporary peak-season prices on Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select from October 4, 2026 until January 17, 2027 (USPS announcement). For Flat Rate at retail, that meant $2.10 more for Large Flat Rate Boxes and $1.00 more for all other Flat Rate products (commercial: $1.75 and $0.85). These are the prices in Notice 123 (effective October 4, 2026), checked November 4, 2026:
| Priority Mail Flat Rate | Inside size | Retail (Post Office, usps.com) | Commercial (online postage) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat Rate Envelope | 12-1/2" x 9-1/2" | $13.90 | $11.97 |
| Legal Flat Rate Envelope | 15" x 9-1/2" | $14.25 | $12.51 |
| Padded Flat Rate Envelope | 12-1/2" x 9-1/2" | $15.00 | $12.84 |
| Small Flat Rate Box | 8-5/8" x 5-3/8" x 1-5/8" | $14.65 | $12.95 |
| Medium Flat Rate Box | 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" or 13-5/8" x 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" | $25.80 | $22.02 |
| Large Flat Rate Box | 12" x 11-3/4" x 5-1/2" | $36.10 | $32.75 |
| APO/FPO/DPO Large Flat Rate Box | 12" x 11-3/4" x 5-1/2" | $34.65 | $31.34 |
Flat Rate means one price to anywhere in the U.S., up to 70 lbs, as long as the contents fit in the box. Commercial prices are what you pay when you buy postage online through Click-N-Ship or a postage service. For the ways to get them, see our guide to postage meters vs PC postage.
When a free Flat Rate box is cheaper than your own box
The alternative to a free Priority Mail box is USPS Ground Advantage in a box you buy or reuse. Ground Advantage is priced by weight and zone (distance). Here are the Notice 123 retail prices side by side, using the same temporary holiday prices:
| Package | Flat Rate (retail) | Ground Advantage, zone 1 | Zone 4 | Zone 5 | Zone 6 | Zone 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 lb | Small box $14.65 | $10.05 | $11.10 | $11.70 | $12.10 | $13.65 |
| 2 lb | Small box $14.65 | $11.30 | $13.50 | $14.85 | $15.85 | $19.80 |
| 10 lb | Medium box $25.80 | $16.75 | $20.20 | $24.25 | $28.90 | $40.85 |
| 20 lb | Large box $36.10 | $24.00 | $28.55 | $37.90 | $47.00 | $72.15 |
What the numbers show:
- Light packages: use your own box. At 1 lb, Ground Advantage costs $10.05 to $13.65 at retail, always less than the $14.65 Small Flat Rate Box.
- 2 lb that fits the Small box: the Flat Rate box wins from zone 5 out ($14.65 vs $14.85 to $19.80). Closer than that, Ground Advantage is cheaper.
- 10 lb in a Medium box: Ground Advantage wins to zones 1 through 5 (up to $24.25). From zone 6, the $25.80 Medium Flat Rate Box is cheaper, and at zone 8 it saves $15.05.
- 20 lb in a Large box: the $36.10 Large Flat Rate Box wins from zone 5 out, and saves $36.05 at zone 8.
Online (commercial) prices shift the break-even. A 10 lb package by commercial Ground Advantage was $17.81 to zone 5, $20.99 to zone 6, $23.02 to zone 7 and $26.39 to zone 8, against $22.02 for a commercial Medium Flat Rate Box. So online, the Medium box wins only from zone 7 out. If your postage service offers Ground Advantage cubic pricing, a small dense box can be cheaper still: $15.22 to zone 8 for a 0.30 cubic foot parcel.
Two more things to factor in. A box you buy costs money, while the Flat Rate box is free, so add your box cost to the Ground Advantage column. And Ground Advantage parcels larger than one cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches) are charged by actual or dimensional weight, whichever is greater, so a big light box can cost more than its weight suggests. Our guide to USPS dimensional weight explains the math. Priority Mail also tends to be faster: the USPS product page describes it as typically 2 to 3 days for most destinations.

Reusing boxes: what each carrier says about old labels
A used box is the cheapest box there is, and all three carriers accept one if it's sturdy and the old markings are dealt with:
- USPS: "Any obsolete marking on a container to be reused for mailing must be obliterated" (DMM 601.5.1). An old Priority Mail box is still USPS packaging under 601.6.1, so covering the markings doesn't let you send it by Ground Advantage.
- UPS: "If any labels, hazardous materials indicators or other previous shipment markings are on the box ensure they are removed or covered" (UPS packaging tips).
- FedEx: "If you're reusing a box, just make sure any old addresses and barcodes are completely covered" (FedEx FAQs). The How to Pack guide adds to check for holes, tears or dented corners.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are USPS boxes really free?
Yes. USPS lists Priority Mail and Flat Rate boxes and envelopes at $0.00 on store.usps.com and ships them free by USPS Ground Advantage. The catch is that they are free only because you pay for the matching service: Priority Mail packaging must be used for Priority Mail, and Priority Mail Express packaging for Priority Mail Express.
Can I use a free Priority Mail box for USPS Ground Advantage?
No. DMM 601.6.1 says USPS-produced packaging must be used only for the applicable product, and that whatever you mail in it pays that product's price no matter how the box is reconfigured or the markings are covered. Ship Ground Advantage in your own box.
Can I use USPS boxes for UPS or FedEx?
No. USPS-produced packaging may be used only for the USPS product it was made for. UPS and FedEx accept any sturdy box of your own, with old labels and markings removed or covered.
Are UPS boxes free?
UPS says it provides free supplies, but you need a UPS.com username to order, quantities can be limited, and under its supplies policy updated in November 2025 your ongoing access depends on your shipping activity. UPS Express boxes, envelopes, Paks and tubes may not be used for UPS Ground, UPS Standard, UPS 3 Day Select or UPS Worldwide Expedited.
Are FedEx boxes free?
FedEx Express envelopes, paks, poly bags, boxes and tubes are free with a FedEx account when you ship with expedited FedEx services. FedEx says to use FedEx Express packaging for FedEx Express shipments only, so they are not for FedEx Ground or Home Delivery.
Is a Flat Rate box cheaper than Ground Advantage?
It depends on weight and distance. At November 2026 retail prices, a 10 lb package costs less in a $25.80 Medium Flat Rate Box than by Ground Advantage to zones 6 through 9, but Ground Advantage is cheaper to zones 1 through 5. Light packages, around 1 lb, are almost always cheaper by Ground Advantage.
Can I reuse an old box to ship a package?
Yes, with any carrier, as long as the box is sturdy and old markings are dealt with. USPS DMM 601.5.1 says any obsolete marking on a reused container must be obliterated, UPS says to remove or cover old labels and hazmat markings, and FedEx says old addresses and barcodes must be completely covered.
The bottom line
Free carrier boxes are free in exchange for using the carrier's faster service. They pay off when you'd use that service anyway: a heavy package going a long way in a USPS Flat Rate box, or an overnight shipment in a UPS or FedEx Express box. For light packages and ground services, reuse a sturdy box or buy plain ones, cover the old labels, and pay the lower ground price.
