Who Can Sign for a Package? Age and ID Rules at FedEx, UPS and USPS

Who Can Sign for a Package? Age and ID Rules at FedEx, UPS and USPS

2026 carrier rules: the only signature services with a stated minimum age are the adult signature options, and at FedEx, UPS and USPS that age is 21 with ID. FedEx charges $10 per package for Adult Signature Required and UPS charges $9.35.

Quick answer: For an ordinary signature (FedEx Direct or Indirect Signature Required, UPS Signature Required, USPS Signature Confirmation), the carriers’ published terms we reviewed do not set a minimum age. For an adult signature, the person signing must be at least 21 and show government-issued photo ID (FedEx and UPS) or an acceptable primary ID (USPS). At FedEx, residential packages can be released without a signature unless the shipper chose a signature option or the package is high value.

Do You Have to Be 18 or 21 to Sign for a Package?

21, but only when the shipper chose an adult signature service. FedEx, UPS and USPS all define their adult signature option around a signer who is at least 21. USPS keeps that delivery record, including the signature, for two years. With Adult Signature Restricted Delivery, if the named person is not 21 or older, USPS returns the item to the sender.

For the standard signature services, none of the carrier terms we reviewed state a minimum age of 18 or any other age. FedEx Direct Signature Required asks for “someone at the delivery address.” A shipper who needs the signer’s age checked has to buy the adult option.

Why Some Packages Require Someone 21 or Older

Because the shipper selected it, usually for a product with an age limit. FedEx’s terms say that when a product is age restricted by law, regulation or other legal mandate for purchase, possession or delivery, the shipper must use Adult Signature Required. FedEx also requires firearms shipments to use Adult Signature Required or Direct Signature Required.

When Do You Have to Sign for a Package?

  • The shipper paid for a signature option. Otherwise FedEx may release residential packages without a signature.
  • The package is high value. For FedEx U.S. packages with a declared value of $500 or more, Direct Signature Required is applied by default and the Direct Signature fee does not apply; FedEx may also refuse to release them without a signature. At USPS, an item insured for more than $500 gets a signature as the delivery record.
  • FedEx policy requires it. FedEx may decline to release packages without a signature for dangerous goods (other than dry ice only), firearms, alcohol, damaged shipments, bill-recipient shipments without a good account, and locations it judges unsuitable.

What Happens if No Eligible Person Is Home

For FedEx Direct and Adult Signature Required, FedEx reattempts delivery. For Indirect Signature Required, FedEx may reattempt if none of the three release methods works. At USPS, an Adult Signature Restricted Delivery item is returned to the sender if the named person is not 21 or older. For UPS rules after missed attempts, see our UPS Adult Signature Required guide.

For Shippers: Signature Fees Add Up

  • FedEx charges the signature fee even if no signature is obtained or the option turns out to be unavailable.
  • Use Adult Signature only where an age check is required. It costs $2.40 more than Direct at FedEx in 2026.
  • Do not pay for FedEx Direct on $500+ declared value packages. FedEx applies it by default without the fee.
  • Check software defaults. A signature option left on for every order is a per-package cost, plus fuel at FedEx.

2027 update: From January 4, 2027, FedEx Delivery Signature Options rise to $8.05 for Indirect, $8.15 for Direct and $10.60 for Adult Signature Required per package (U.S. package services and FedEx International Ground). Source: FedEx 2027 surcharge and fee changes.
