UPS Call Tag vs Return Label: 2026 Cost and When to Use Each

UPS Call Tag vs Return Label: 2026 Cost and When to Use Each

2026 UPS rate: a UPS call tag (3 UPS Pickup Attempts) is $14.50 per label, while a UPS Print Return Label or Electronic Return Label is $1.15 per label, plus return transportation charges.

2027 update: UPS Daily Rates rise an average net 5.9% effective December 21, 2026, but UPS has not yet published 2027 surcharge amounts, so the figures below are 2026 rates. We will update this post when UPS publishes them; see our UPS 2027 rate increase guide. Source: UPS shipping rates, Important Updates.

Quick answer: A call tag means UPS prints the return label and a UPS driver goes to your customer to collect the package, with up to three pickup attempts. A return label means you, or UPS by email, give the customer a label and the customer gets the package to UPS. The call tag fee is billed when you request it. Return label fees are billed only after the package enters the UPS system.

What Is a UPS Call Tag?

"Call tag" is the long-standing name for a carrier-initiated pickup of a return. In the 2026 UPS rate guide's returns table it appears as 3 UPS Pickup Attempts (Label Provided by UPS Driver): "UPS prints a return label, and a UPS driver makes three attempts to collect the return package." The fee is $14.50 per label. The guide's appendix also lists a Call Tag charge of $14.50, described as UPS printing a return label and a driver making "at least one attempt" to collect the package.

Your customer doesn't need a printer and doesn't have to leave home. That makes a call tag a fit for warranty swaps, B2B equipment recoveries and customers who can't get to a drop-off point.

What Is a UPS Return Label?

UPS has two label-based options at $1.15 per label in 2026:

  • Print Return Label (Label Sent by You). You put a printed return label in the outbound box, or provide a PDF label on request through your website or returns portal. The customer packs, labels and gets the package to UPS.
  • Electronic Return Label (Label Sent by UPS via Email). UPS emails a return label and mobile barcode to your customer. The customer prints the label or brings the barcode to a The UPS Store location, where the label is printed for them.

The appendix also lists a UPS Web Return Label at $1.50 per online request in the current guide (updated September 7, 2026), printed from the merchant's website and charged "when the shipment is scanned by UPS for return service."

Return transportation is charged on top of every option. The rate guide says transportation charges for return packages are billed after the package enters the UPS system.

What happened to 1 UPS Pickup Attempt?

The UPS Tariff/Terms say that effective January 12, 2025, the 1 UPS Pickup Attempt service was discontinued as a general service offering and is available only to select customers with UPS's express written approval. The 2026 rate guide still prices a 1 UPS Pickup Attempt Label at $6.95 under UPS Import Control, with a note that it is only available for select countries. For most domestic returns, the choice is between a $1.15 label and a $14.50 call tag.

UPS Returns Exchange

The rate guide describes UPS Returns Exchange as a contractual service in which UPS delivers a replacement item and picks up a like item for return during the same visit. No public price is listed. Contact your UPS account representative. Like the call tag, its fee is billed at the time of request.

Why the Billing Timing Matters

The rate guide's general information on returns says "3 UPS Pickup Attempts Label and UPS Returns Exchange accessorial fees are billed at the time of request," while "Print Return Label and Electronic Return Label fees are billed after the package enters the UPS system." In practice:

  • A return label that is never used doesn't generate the $1.15 fee or return transportation, because neither is billed until the package enters the UPS system. That makes it cheap to include labels in outbound boxes.
  • A call tag is billed when you create it, whether or not the customer ends up handing over the package. Only request one when the return is confirmed.

Restrictions That Apply to Both

  • UPS Returns Services are not provided by UPS Next Day Air Saver or UPS 2nd Day Air A.M.
  • UPS Simple Rate returns are limited to Print Return Label only.
  • Hazardous materials or dangerous goods requiring shipping papers, and packages containing firearms, cannot be retrieved through UPS Returns Services.
  • Multiple-piece shipments are not available for UPS Returns Services within the 50 states and Puerto Rico.
  • Under section 3.2 of the UPS terms, UPS does not accept domestic packages worth more than $1,000 returned by Print Return Label, Print and Mail Return Label, Electronic Return Label or 1 UPS Pickup Attempt. 3 UPS Pickup Attempts is not on that domestic list.

Adding a Pickup to a Return Label

The rate guide notes that Print and Electronic Return Labels can be combined with a UPS On-Call Pickup at extra cost. In 2026 an On-Call Pickup is $9.65 for a future-day request and $15.75 for a same-day request, charged per pickup request. A pickup from a home adds a $6.50 residential surcharge, and On-Call Pickup area surcharges of $6.55 (residential) or $8.85 (extended residential) apply in some ZIP codes. A $1.15 label plus a $9.65 pickup is $10.80 before surcharges, still below the $14.50 call tag. However, it's one pickup request, while the call tag includes up to three attempts.

When to Use Which

  • Retail and e-commerce returns: Print or Electronic Return Label. Lowest fee, billed only if used.
  • Customer without a printer: Electronic Return Label. They can show the mobile barcode at The UPS Store.
  • Heavy items, B2B equipment, or customers who can't drop off: call tag (3 UPS Pickup Attempts).
  • Advance replacements where you need the old unit back at the same visit: ask about UPS Returns Exchange.

FedEx Equivalents

FedEx prices its pickup-based returns lower than UPS. Per FedEx's 2026 surcharge table, the FedEx Ground Call Tag is $8.80 per package for a commercial pickup requested through electronic shipping solutions or fedex.com/pickup, and $10 if requested through FedEx Customer Service or for a residential pickup. FedEx ExpressTag (Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, 2Day A.M. and 2Day) is $8.80 per package. Effective January 4, 2027, these become $9.35, $10.65 and $9.35 per the 2027 table.

What to Check on Your Invoices

  • Call tag fees for returns that were cancelled. The fee is billed at request, so a cancelled return still costs you unless it's credited.
  • Duplicate call tags for the same order.
  • Return labels billed for packages that never moved. These fees should be billed only after the package enters the UPS system.
  • Residential surcharges on On-Call Pickups from homes ($6.50 per request in 2026).
