Stop Buying Checks From Your Bank: Costco, Walmart and Sam's Club Prices (2026)

Stop Buying Checks From Your Bank: Costco, Walmart and Sam's Club Prices (2026)

You do not have to buy checks from your bank. In November 2026, 480 three-to-a-page business checks cost $68.09 from Costco with free trackable delivery, $49.05 from Walmart Business Checks and $39.19 from Sam's Club Checks (Walmart and Sam's Club add shipping at checkout). Personal checks start at $12.75 for 100 at Walmart and $22.09 for 160 at Costco, delivered. Banks set their own check prices, and they can be much higher.

My bank wanted about $160 for a set of checks. I ordered from Costco instead and paid under $40, delivered to my door. Same routing number, same account number, same checks as far as my bank is concerned. I had never thought to look anywhere else, and I suspect a lot of business owners haven't either, so I priced out the main options.

Quick answer: Any check printer that prints your bank's routing number and your account number correctly will work. Costco, Walmart and Sam's Club all sell personal and business checks online, including manual (handwritten) checks and laser checks for QuickBooks and other accounting software. Order with an existing check in front of you, match the starting number to where your current checks end, and skip the add-ons you don't need.

All prices below were checked on the Costco, Walmart and Sam's Club check websites on November 4, 2026. They change often, so confirm the price in your cart before you order.

Can you order checks from somewhere other than your bank?

Yes. Walmart's business check FAQ answers the question directly: "You can order checks anywhere you choose." The Sam's Club Checks help page uses the same words, and both say their checks meet all bank requirements.

Banks generally hire a check printer to make your checks, and many send you to that printer's ordering site, but the bank decides what you pay. The FAQ on Deluxe's bank ordering site says the price of your checks is ultimately set by your financial institution, based on things like your account program, any discounts or waivers, and what the bank pays Deluxe (Deluxe check order FAQ). The same FAQ notes the bank may earn a profit on check orders. So the price you see is the bank's decision.

The discount programs use the same kind of large printers. Costco's check site is run by Harland Clarke, a Vericast business, and says it is operated by a third party, not by Costco (Costco Checks). Walmart's business check FAQ lists its CheckSafe fraud service as owned and managed by Harland Clarke Corp.

Business check prices: Costco vs Walmart vs Sam's Club

Manual business checks are the three-to-a-page checks that go in a desk binder with a stub for your records. These are the basic single-copy (no carbon) versions of each store's standard design.

Duplicate checks, which make a carbonless copy of each check you write, cost more: 480 duplicates were $73.78 at Sam's Club and $85.91 at Walmart. High-security manual checks with extra fraud features were $172.89 for 480 at Costco.

If you only write a few checks a year, Costco's Proprietor Check, a smaller business check sold in packs, was $25.39 for 156 checks or $35.29 for 312, with free trackable delivery.

Computer (laser) checks for QuickBooks and other software

If you print checks from accounting software, you need laser checks in the layout your software expects, such as check on top with two vouchers below. On Costco's site you pick your printer type and software first, and it shows only the compatible checks.

Shipping and how long checks take

  • Costco: orders usually ship within 3 to 5 business days. Business and computer checks come free by trackable standard delivery in 7 to 10 business days, or $15.60 for expedited (5 to 7 days) and $30.48 for express (4 to 6 days). Personal checks come free by trackable delivery in 9 to 12 business days, or $22.80 for express (7 to 9 days). Free trackable delivery isn't available to Hawaii, Alaska or Puerto Rico, though paid express is. Costco presents these prices and the free delivery as member benefits, so check whether you need a membership to order. Costco's check site takes Visa and Mastercard.
  • Walmart: personal checks include free standard shipping. Business check prices do not include shipping and processing, which are added at checkout. Walmart says to expect checks within 12 business days and offers expedited delivery. It cannot ship checks to a Walmart store for pickup.
  • Sam's Club: expect checks within 10 to 12 business days, with rush and expedited options. The product page does not show a shipping price; it is calculated at checkout.

Shipping is where a cheap price can disappear. Compare the total in your cart, not the price on the product page, and order before you run out so you don't end up paying for express delivery.

How to order checks without your bank

  1. Have a real check in front of you. Walmart and Sam's Club both say to use an existing check, not a deposit slip, and that the information must match what your bank has on file. Orders are verified before printing.
  2. Enter the routing and account numbers exactly. These print in magnetic ink along the bottom of the check (the MICR line) and are what bank machines read. A wrong digit means checks that don't clear.
  3. Set the starting check number. Start after your last check so you never have two checks with the same number.
  4. Pick the format. Manual checks for handwriting, or laser checks matched to your software and printer. If you print checks yourself, your software maker or bank can tell you which layout and ink you need.
  5. Decide on add-ons. Logos, duplicates, fraud services, binders and faster shipping all add cost. Walmart's CheckSafe service is $6.00 per business order or $2.00 per personal pack. Add only what you will use.
  6. Test the first check. When the new checks arrive, check the name, address, routing number, account number and check number against your old checks before you use them.

U.S. bank accounts only: Walmart and Sam's Club say they do not print checks for foreign accounts. If your bank has merged or changed its routing number, call your bank or the check company before you order.

Check fraud: what the savings don't change

Check fraud has grown. In a February 2023 alert, the U.S. Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network said banks filed more than 680,000 suspicious activity reports about check fraud in 2022, nearly double the year before, and tied the jump in part to mail theft (FinCEN alert). Where you buy your checks matters less than how you handle them:

  • Choose checks with security features if you mail a lot of checks. All three stores sell high-security lines; Costco's, for example, advertise features such as a hologram foil bar and heat-reactive ink.
  • Drop outgoing checks inside the post office rather than leaving them in a mailbox. If you mail checks often, see where to buy stamps cheapest.
  • Store blank checks locked up, and shred voided ones.
  • Ask your bank about Positive Pay, a business service that matches each check presented for payment against a list of checks you issued.
  • Pay recurring vendors by ACH or card where you can, so fewer paper checks are in the mail at all.

If you think a check was stolen from the mail, report it to your bank right away and to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455 or uspis.gov.

Deposit slips and endorsement stamps

The same check sites sell deposit slips (deposit tickets) and "for deposit only" endorsement stamps printed with your account details, and you can order them without ordering checks. These are the prices on each site's product pages on November 4, 2026, before tax:

Costco's three-to-a-page deposit tickets are the same size as its three-to-a-page business checks, so they fit the same binder. Its endorsement stamp prints "Pay to the order of", your bank's name, "For deposit only", your name and your account number. Costco Checks' shipping table lists free standard delivery for business products and personal check accessories. Walmart and Sam's Club add shipping at checkout; Sam's Club says accessories typically ship within 5 to 7 business days. If you buy personal checks from Walmart, each pack already includes 8 deposit tickets.

You may not need deposit slips at all. Mobile check deposit in your bank's app, or a remote deposit scanner on a business account, deposits checks without a slip. The same sites also sell tax forms; I compared 1099 kits, including Costco Checks', in Do you need to buy 1099 forms?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to buy checks from my bank?

No. Walmart's and Sam's Club's check FAQs both say you can order checks anywhere you choose. A check works as long as your bank's routing number and your account number are printed correctly.

How much are Costco checks?

On November 4, 2026, Costco charged $22.09 for 160 basic personal checks, $68.09 for 480 three-to-a-page business checks and $60.19 for 400 laser checks, with free trackable standard delivery.

Does Walmart sell business checks?

Yes, through the Walmart Business Checks website. On November 4, 2026, 480 single three-to-a-page business checks were $49.05 and 400 laser voucher checks were $73.89, plus shipping.

Where is the cheapest place to order business checks?

Of the three stores, Sam's Club had the lowest product price for 480 manual business checks ($39.19), then Walmart ($49.05), then Costco ($68.09). Costco includes trackable shipping and the others add shipping at checkout, so compare cart totals.

Where can I buy deposit slips cheap?

From the same check sites that sell discount checks. On November 4, 2026, 240 three-to-a-page business deposit slips were $22.44 at Sam's Club Checks (plus shipping) and $23.39 at Costco Checks with free standard shipping, and Costco sold 100 personal deposit slips for $12.09. Walmart's personal check packs include 8 deposit tickets each. If you deposit checks with your bank's mobile app, you don't need slips.

Why are checks from the bank so expensive?

The bank sets the price. Deluxe's check-ordering FAQ says the price is ultimately set by your financial institution, which may earn a profit on check orders.

Are checks from Costco or Walmart safe to use?

Costco's check site is run by Harland Clarke, Walmart's CheckSafe service is owned by Harland Clarke, and Walmart and Sam's Club say their checks meet all bank requirements. Order only from the official sites linked from costco.com, walmart.com or samsclub.com, and check every number on the first check before you use it.

How long do checks take to arrive?

Walmart says within 12 business days and Sam's Club 10 to 12. Costco ships within 3 to 5 business days, then quotes 7 to 12 business days for free delivery. Plan on two to three weeks, or pay for expedited or express shipping.

The bottom line

Checks are a small line item, but they are a good example of overhead most businesses never question: you reorder from the bank because that is where you ordered last time. Five minutes of comparison saved me over $120 on one order. If you want help finding more costs like that in your operation, from shipping invoices to software you don't use, get in touch.
